SL2s and strobe photography

Hey, 

 

I ran into a problem: If I shoot with a strobe and I make my adjustments everything is fine until I need to press the shutter. 

As my Sync time is 1/250 the screen goes dark. 

Is there any way to tell the camera that we are going to use it for strobe photography and that I am manually setting the exposure

and everything. I only need the focus peaking and that's it. 

I can use the preview of the image as control but I don't see the milliseconds before the pictures. So it's like shooting in complete 

darkness with a flash attached. 

I can use this as an experience, but I would like to deactivate the exposure preview! 

Last time I had a shooting I used a Tungsten Lamp to give me a clue of what I was doing. 

would be nice to hear how you are dealing with this problem ?

the solution is to shoot with exposure preview off in M mode ...

and shoot in M mode. That is how I shoot in studio with stobes

I have a User Profile for flash: M-mode (shutter set to 1/160), ISO 100 and EVF exposure preview set to PAS (normally it is set to PASM).

page 3  live view settings : 

exposure preview PAS (deactivates M preview) 

Then you can always see the image. 

Very good. Setting I never needed with the DSLR. Now I get it. Thanxs.

I’m saving this as I found myself in the exact situation as you yesterday night. The images came out incredibly sharp and correct but the way to get there was… interesting! Know I know what the PASM setting does!

Yes exactly. 

It deactivates the simulation. 

But my main issue is that I can't use the SL2-S with HSS. 

This ist such a waist. 

I am not getting it? If they want to keep that in their hands, why can't we but strong strobes? 

Also: I need to see in advance what I do. I need a modeling light. 

So you exclude: Fashion, People with strobe, some sport, street with flash, commercial photography.

I don’t know about it. I’m so used to shoot film in studio that I rarely do TTL or HSS so to me once the EVF is off I’m good to go

Leica's SF60 and the Nissin MG10 support HSS and TTL. You can even group them if you need more power. I've shot commercial and portraits for 30 years and never once been limited by not having HSS. If I need to shoot at shutter speeds that high do it properly. With a camera that supports leaf shutters. HSS has too many power limitations.

You can use HSS on the SL2-s, just not the way you want to...

since you are in Germany ... there was a company that came from Hensel and made a TTl studio light that works with Leica.. they went out of Business but may be a used one is still for sale.

Don't remember the name. just google a little to find it.

In any case most studio lights don't have HSS or TTL because it is all new space for them. I think godox had a good influence on many competitive brands and we are seeing new products on the market that includes TTL.

I already work with Godox and Jinbei too. 

Thanxs for the Info of Hensel. I am going to check this with a rental service over here. 

I can get the Highspeed out of the Q2, but only with the 28 mm. 

I guess it´s just a matter of time. 

Until then I will work with the ND Filter. The good thing about the SL2s is, that you can still see what you are 

doing. This was completely different with the DSLR. I was blind. So HSS was crucial. 

Next week there will be the photopia here in Hamburg. Maybe I can talk to somebody over there.

The Q2 has a leaf shutter in the lens. It's not doing HSS.

That’s what I was referring too. 
i can shoot with 1/500 up to 1/2000. 
Without loosing energy. 
And I can use the strobes I already have.

+1. Having HSS ability is like buying insurance,....can depend on it if needed occasionally. An ND filter generally works better than HSS (but there are odds as well).
