SL2-s video settings for 'easy' files?

Hi

I have an SL2-s for a few weeks and love it so far (I sold my m10 and still have a CL).

My interests are 100% stills photography, but from time to time I will shoot a short segment of video as a 'souvenir' or to make some 'instagram art'. With my iPhone and CL I can import video clips to Lightroom as part of my normal workflow (here I can view but of course not edit, but if I get something I want to use I can then export the file e.g. to iMovie).

I imported some SL2-s video over the weekend. It imported to Lightroom (think I was set to MOV) but I could not view it properly (very 'staccato'), and I could not open the exported file in any video application (iMovie, quicktime). In case memory card speed is relevant I am using a Lexar 128GB with 250 MB/s speed.

What would be the recommended video settings for this kind of casual short clips? MOV or mp4? and then 4K, C4K, FHD etc?? Crop mode? (I don't speak video terminology

If you search a little on this forum you will find this has been addressed before.

I assume you just want something simple with no editing and viewable on you computer without buying more software.

for simple use you can start shooting in mp4 30p. size is up to you, c4k, 1080p. Just like you iPhone video image the color editing is limited, so better to get all the setting correct in camera. think exposure, color and contrast.

If you find the need to edit better color and contrast  you can move to LOG in MOV format. this will require a software that can view this format. I use Davinci Resolve Studio to edit it and convert it to regular rec709 video.

Thanks a lot Photoworks, I found some threads for this but I struggle with the terminology e.g. GOP/MBitps etc. 

When I select mp4 I am presented with 4K, FHD and FHD slomo. Looks like FHD is the 1080 option? (big enough for me I think) Not sure what you mean by 30p but I note that once I select FHP I am then presented with a bunch of FPS options - did you mean 30 fps?

Sounds like my main mistake was being in MOV mode so I guess it does not matter so much which FHD/1080 option I choose so long as I am in mp4? I'll take note that LOG/MOV would be needed if I want to do any 'real' editing.

Yes, H.264 MP4 is the "universal" video format. Any modern editor, browser, or even television should understand it (although some may not be able to playback UHD). The downside is that it is limited to 8-bit colour depth in Leica's implementation. That's not ideal if you want to do lots of post-processing, but it's fine for your purposes.

30P is 30 frames per second (29.97 actually, but that's immaterial). That's the standard TV frame rate in the US and many other NTSC countries. 25 FPS is the standard in Europe, and 24 FPS is the cinema standard. Pick the one you like, any device should play them all.

FHD is 1080P, "high definition". UHD is 2160P "ultra high definition", commonly called 4K. Either should be fine for Instagram, although you may want to use UHD if you think that you'll show the footage elsewhere (like on your TV).

Hey Photoworks, out of curiosity, which version Resolve Studio are you using. I tried opening the h264 10 bit 422 lgop file with my Resolve studio 12.5 and it doesn't work stating "Media Offline". If you are using a later version than mine, then they probably added support for that codec along the way, just wondering if that is the reason for me not being able to open the file.

you should just update the version.

in any car Media Offline is an indicator that the program does not see your source files, you have to reimport the video files or relink them from you HDD
