I think the perfect travel set-up is a D-Lux 3.

The problem with most -- most all -- travel shots is that they're inane. The people shooting them, however experienced, don't know enough about the area to avoid hopeless cliches. See a pretty mountain, shoot it. See the tourists in the square, shoot them. If you're going to shoot post cards, why carry a ton of equipment?

Don't be too hard on travel photography, John (I think maybe you're only half serious?): aside from the therapy to our own jaded ways of seeing by encountering new, unfamiliar scenes (am I alone in returning home with my senses sharpened?), there is the fact that we, as respectful strangers, can often find something illuminating in other cultures/landscapes that may pass the local person by as being a mere commonplace--a first encounter may be superficial but it doesn't take long to get under the skin of things--take the obvious picture and then look beneath the surface. The photographer has great cover from being among snapping tourists, also. And what's wrong with pictures of tourists? They can be wierd and wonderfull too. For example these folk viewing an eclipse in Venice, forgetting their offspring has no eye-protection--and isn't it strange the way ancient monuments under restoration get a fake screen of themselves, so the tourist photographer doesn't go home disappointed? One of the facades of the Doge's Palace is a convincing copy on canvas...

More to the point, I was travelling with just M6, 35mm and a basic Metz auto flash so the M8 equivalent would be 28; for a couple of years after this, I only travelled with M6 + 28: travelling light is more liberating than lugging weight.

I'd agree that snaphots are a truly important part of people's lives - nothing at all wrong with having an album full of family pictures that you can look back on in years to come.

The 'travel kit' that i used on a recent trip to Denmark - just an M6 and Noctilux - maybe not the lightest lens to carry around, but i still love the look...

Apologies for quoting self, but does anyone know if it's safe to use an old Metz auto (ie not dedicated, basic hot shoe) flash on the M8? Are the electronics robust enough to tolerate? (Still my only flash unit) Thanks...
