Technician Posted July 22, 2021 Share #1 Posted July 22, 2021 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Nikonite here. After drooling over one for 11 years, I've finally scored R8 in pristine condition. 2001 production year, late serial number (27xxxxx). All in all, I am happy camper. Now I need a lens. I've searched the web regarding R-bayonet compatibility and got a little bit confused. My understanding is that the lens with the serrated cam can be either 3-cam version or R-cam version. R-cam comes with this serrated thingy, but without two other cams. Am I wrong? These photos are from my local board listings. One is for Elmarit 28 mm f/2.8 V1*, the other one is for Summicron 50 mm f/2 V2. Can I use either of these on my R8 without fear of damaging the camera in the long run? * — Elmarit has been converted to Nikon, but seller keeps the parts for original R-mount, thus the lens can be converted back. a.noctilux Posted July 22, 2021 Share #2 Posted July 22, 2021 (edited) Welcome Technician. I don't have R8, you may need ROM lenses The two lenses you showed can be used on R8 but would lack some advanced functions of the R8 (flash, 'Program setting', etc.). more on ROM lenses ... for more info on R Cams: nice read here http://web.archive.org/web/20120401152818/http://members.multimania.co.uk/JemK/Pic-A-Week/cams.htm Edited July 22, 2021 by a.noctilux
Technician Posted July 22, 2021 Author Share #3 Posted July 22, 2021 Thank you for rapid reply! I've searched elswhere, but haven't seen the explanation as elaborate as on "Photoetnography" page. That helps.

ROM lenses have some advantages in flash photography and internal communication between the lens and the body, but none of that is strictly necessary. Rather, you may use any 3cam and R-only Leica R lens with R8/R9 without hesitation. The only lenses that do not work on R8/R9 are 1cam and 2cam lenses (original Leicaflex and Leicaflex SL/SL2 lenses).

We say same thing, as I wrote the line after your quote @wizard my main answer is to link to ROM lenses of Wiki (here...), don't you see 'mmmaaaaayyy' ? "... a.noctilux Posted July 22, 2021 Share #7 Posted July 22, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Wizard, as we wrote the same thing, all is good. You added of course more informations, so the OP can use these 3 cams on his R8 with some restrictions.
