Leica SL2-S - Unable to punch in while recording!

Hi,

I recently got a chance to try the SL2-S and I was beyond excited! I was sure it was going to be my next camera for video, until I discovered a huge flaw!!!

 

YOU CAN'T PUNCH IN TO CHECK FOCUS WHILE RECORDING!!!

 

Why! Just why would you not include this as a feature. Cameras have been doing it for years. It would be like buying a car but the lights only work when you're stationary 🙄

 

So, my question is. Has anyone found a work around to this? A feature, an external product, anything? 

 

Any help would be appreciated.

I use external recorder that does it just fine when tapping on the screen

Same here, but I also find that the EVF is sharp enough that you rarely have to punch-in. When I do (for stills), it's only to confirm that I got it right originally.

RM, you will need to get used to a different workflow. Leica put some great glass behind the eyepiece, not just in front of the sensor. I've worked with cameras where the EVF was just a "framing device," because it was fuzzy. This is not one of those cameras. You will need to start trusting your eyes again. I admit that it's quite scary until you see the results, and that it may not be possible if your eyes have a large amount of astigmatism.

As impressive as the SL2s seems to be for video (and there is quite a few seasoned pros here who bought it for this reason) I still believe it is an Hybrid camera, therefore it is a stunning still image machine that can produce stunning moving ones... but ergonomically it is a still image making thing before and foremost.

And yes I try very hard (and with good fun) to rig my SL2(not s) to be as good a video tool it can be with lots of accessories.... and sometimes just naked as it is
 

The "dedicated" tool to go all out on video with an L mount remains, IMHO, the S1H. I dont know if you can punch in during recording either with this camera, but the EVF and focus peaking are more than good enough to nail focus manualy on the fly on the Lumixes and SL cameras.

If you are a seasonned video maker, do this for a living, chance are your external monitor/recorder does that for you.
