carylwithay Posted August 29, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) What lens can I use with my Leica M8 to get animage just like this of the moon? This was taken with my Nikon D70. I have been trying to get it with the Leica but get only tiny one. Caryl
Advertisement Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Hi carylwithay, Take a look here Full moon and question! . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
samwells Posted August 29, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 29, 2007 Caryl: Trouble is, you can't get a lens with a greater length than 135mm for the M. Only way to go longer is via the Visoflex - a Leica device (no longer made) that turns the M into a reflex camera; it's rather like coupling a 19th century steam locomotive to a Japanese bullet train, but it does work (I use one on my M7). That then means you can use Leica lenses up to 400mm (designated Telyt), or even more. It's all slightly clunky by modern standards, and a bit squinty in operation, but reasonable pricewise since they're all secondhand - I picked up a near-mint boxed Visoflex III plus 280mm Telyt for 299GBP a year ago. You'd either find it great fun, or a right PITA. Other more experienced members might have further advice! cheers: Sam
carylwithay Posted August 29, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted August 29, 2007 Thank you, Sam. If all that would work on the M* and no damage it, I could be tempted. I love to push the medium. However, the M8 does not take to all lenses well. Caryl
samwells Posted August 29, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 29, 2007 "If all that would work on the M* and no damage it, I could be tempted." ...well it can, apparently...there was an article in LFI magazine Issue 5/2007 (June/July) where the use of a Visoflex on the M8 was covered...worth tracking down if you're interested. cheers: Sam
andybarton Posted August 29, 2007 Share #5 Posted August 29, 2007 You are going to need to use something very serious to get a decent sized orb. This http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/nature-wildlife/17988-moon.html was with my 560 Telyt on my DMR (767mm equivalent). Not possible with an M, AFAIK. albert Posted August 29, 2007 Share #6 Posted August 29, 2007 Can an M be hooked up to a Leica Spotting Scope, with an adapter, like my D-lux 3 was for this moon photograph ? Then you would have a nice little spotting scope around the house to enjoy....Al
carylwithay Posted August 29, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted August 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Spotting scop is interesting. I have a Nikon spotting scope. Must learn how to attach it to any camera. I like your moon. Caryl
mhoersch Posted August 29, 2007 Share #8 Posted August 29, 2007 Two casual moon photos with M8 and: APO-Telyt 3.4/135mm Visoflex III and Telyt 4.8/280 Both 100% crops. Apart from rather strong thermic air currents in the second image you can easily tell that the APO-Telyt is a far, far better lens. Attaching the M8 to a spotting scope or, better still, a telescope, will yield much better results.
Artichoke Posted August 31, 2007 Share #9 Posted August 31, 2007 Thank you, Sam. If all that would work on the M* and no damage it, I could be tempted. I love to push the medium. However, the M8 does not take to all lenses well.Caryl providing you are careful mounting the M8, the Viso III will cause no damage it was designed to give the M series cameras DSLR capabilities, meaning allowing for through the lens focus so tele and macro work can be done these have not been made for decades but some are available on the used market, though prices have escalated of late the adapters & lenses for it make for arcane study, but the results with it can be excellent remarkably long lenses are far cheaper than I would have expected ...once the skies get clear here at night (we have had beaucoups rain on the Gulf Coast) I will try the moon with my 560 Telyt just for yucks
