vielhilftviel Posted May 5, 2021 Share #1 Posted May 5, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am filming a lot outdoor activity’s recently and I find it extremely hard to find a balanced exposure on the SL2. When I expose so that the sky is already overexposed but at least remains some visible clouds and blue the ground is often just way to dark. Is there anything I can do to achieve a more balanced look? I tried playing with the video profiles and doing -2 in contrast but looks almost identical in most shots. Any tips? Slender Posted May 5, 2021 Share #2 Posted May 5, 2021 Are you shootling L-Log in 10 bits? The screen at the back of the camera is good but if you can monitor with an external one (even a cheap SWIT with fasle color+zebra+histogram+waveform helps tremendously) you can balance your exposure better. Once you slap on the LUT of your choice (I Like the Leica Classic 709) you can fine tune how hard you want your contrasts to be or not. Choose what your priority is if you are shooting against the sun, if you want details in the sky you might have to lift shadows in post. If you expose right for ground you might have to pull highlights... and the leeway you have in both direction changes according to various factors, but ISO is the main one. It's the same for most (in not all) digital video camera... the higher in ISO you go, the less DR you may have BUT it will usualy switch up = at low iso you can recover more from the shadows than highlights... and at higher settings you gain more ability to retrieve details from highlights. An example for another camera... Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Re-reading your question this can lead me to think you are shooting w/o gamma profiles (no HLG, no L-LOG) but the "standard" 709 curve and profiles such as "vivid, natural, monochrome...." ? If so their settings are waaaaay too contrasty and don't handle very well for grading at all. If you dont want to grade and want to display your images straigh away on a compatible (HDR) monitor or television, HLG is easier to live with but is weirder to grade/edit. It has excellent highlight retention however.

Yes I am using natural the most because I can’t shoot in L-Log without a recorder and not sure if I want to get one because that would just be one more thing to carry and set up when hiking. As far as I know the SL2S could do that in camera but I don’t want to buy a new camera just for that because I feel kind of scammed by Leica as a SL2 user. What setup do you use and what types of footage are you filming with the SL2?
BernardC Posted May 5, 2021 Share #5 Posted May 5, 2021 The SL2 can do 10-bit internal, according to the specifications.

I was recording all my recent videos in MOV but when I checked the setting I think I still had it in MP4...
