johnwolf Posted August 27, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 27, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) For those of you who use Leica R lenses on your Canon bodies and also use an M8, can you speak to relative image quality on those two systems? I prefer the M8 files over those from my 5D and Canon L lenses, but I'm wondering what difference the R lenses would make. I know the merits of SLR and RF systems, as well as the implication of R lenses on Canon bodies, and I don't want to start a "which system is better" thread. I'd just appreciate any objective or subjective impressions about relative image quality. Thanks. John
Advertisement Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 Hi johnwolf, Take a look here 5D and R lenses vs M8 IQ. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
carstenw Posted August 27, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 27, 2007 I had a 5D with a 35 Cron, 50 Cron, 80 Lux, 90 Cron, 90 Elmarit, 135 Elmarit, 180 Elmarit, all the latest versions except no Apo lenses, and I much prefer the overall results of the M8. The 5D has great IQ, and slightly higher resolution than the M8, but the colour and micro-contrast I find better on the M8. The weight and size of the equipment was the deciding factor for me though, not the IQ. There are some 5D with 17-40L, 50 Cron and 80 Lux shots on one of my sites. Please ignore the indoor super-wide shots, which were taken with the 17-40L. A Mental Picture
johnwolf Posted August 27, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted August 27, 2007 Thanks, Carsten. I guess the only way to determine for myself is to rent a couple of R lenses. I own and like both systems, but I'd like to simplify. John
carstenw Posted August 27, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 27, 2007 A really cheap and effective way to try it out would be to buy the latest 50mm f/2 Summicron-R, and an adapter. You may need to swap out the focus screen for the best results. The lens should only set you back about $300-400, and you can sell it again for the same. A 3-CAM or R-cam lens is fine, no need to pay extra for ROM. You'll see right away that for the same price, this lens is much nicer than the Canon 50/1.4, with nicer bokeh and colour, and a smoother look overall. The sharpness is similar. The 80 Lux is unique, and I prefer it to the 85L, but some feel the other way.
