Richard K Posted April 7, 2021 Share #1 Posted April 7, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) For your black and white files. Does anyone know if there is software that would mimic the look of some classic papers? Eg, Insignia, Portriga, Azo, platinum, etc. I'm aware that LR and Silver Effex etc. can simulate sepia, cyanotype, etc., but I haven’t seen a platinum simulation or specific papers. Jeff S Posted April 7, 2021 Share #2 Posted April 7, 2021 I first recommend experimenting with some modern papers, some of which are reminiscent of darkroom papers, and have their own wonderfully diverse tones and textures. As far as additional toning, one must also consider the ink set used in conjunction with the paper, as well as the editing/print software. There’s nothing quite like a well crafted platinum/palladium print, but one can use a dedicated all-black ink set and a RIP (Piezography with carbon ink and QTR from Jon Cone, etc) to better achieve the look. But just as in darkroom days, printing is not plug-and-play; it takes time and effort, and a good eye. Jeff
andybarton Posted April 7, 2021 Share #3 Posted April 7, 2021 I think that the question was asking about simulation on screen, not prints on paper.
Richard K Posted April 7, 2021 Author Share #4 Posted April 7, 2021 Thanks for reply. I apologize for not being clear. I meant the platinum or Insignia etc. look in the final file, which one can then upload or, in my case, use to make a photo book.
Jeff S Posted April 7, 2021 Share #5 Posted April 7, 2021 The issues with making a high quality photo book are similar to those with prints... paper chosen, ink set, software used, etc. Of course there are bargain solutions, but I was referring to optimal quality. Screen results are another matter, and will never simulate a platinum print IMO. Jeff
Richard K Posted April 7, 2021 Author Share #6 Posted April 7, 2021 I think you’re right. Just thought it might be nice to see an image that looks like platinum or Azo, Portriga or Neogaz...🙂 Thanks again.
Richard K Posted April 7, 2021 Author Share #7 Posted April 7, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) I’ve had acceptable results by starting with light sepia and trying to adjust. Then printing the book on matte paper. But I understand and appreciate what you’re saying. If I was rich and young, I might be tempted to bind together a set of gravure prints, another look I like. Jeff S Posted April 7, 2021 Share #8 Posted April 7, 2021 One needn’t be rich to produce luscious prints. Weston did it with a bare lightbulb and a contact print frame. Digital solutions have given us even more flexibility and convenience, but it’s the tactile and visual pleasure of a work on paper (print or book) that distinguishes the result and can’t be simulated. But, yes, having the energy and time afforded by youth is helpful. Jeff
Richard K Posted April 7, 2021 Author Share #9 Posted April 7, 2021 I spent decades using LF and ULF cameras to make contact prints. After a heart attack 9 years ago, I picked up digital due to my physical limitations. I guess I’m trying to recapture some of that magic in a book. I no longer have a darkroom (moved to a condo) but I can certainly have Pt prints made from digital files. I was hoping to be able to produce a book of prints on matte paper that might simulate the look of platinum.
Jeff S Posted April 7, 2021 Share #10 Posted April 7, 2021 (edited) If you’re talking about sequencing prints in portfolio/book form, then I refer back to my first post. But if you’re talking about book self-publishing, you might want to start another thread, or have Andy/mods change title of this one, to clarify book publishing intent. There are others here who are experienced in that realm and might provide better guidance. There are also many discussions here about book services and options, but maybe not ‘platinum’ look specifically.
