ttriolo Posted August 26, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 26, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am a new M8 owner. I am having trouble transferring images directly from the M8 to my Mac using the USB cord. I am having to do this because neither of my Sandisk Ultra II cards can be read by either of my two card readers. I will not be using Sandisk SD cards again. I have had other issues with them as well like false "full card' messages. So, how does one directly transfer images (JPEGs & RAW) directly from the camera to a Mac. Instructions say to use the program "Digital Pictures" but I see no such program on either the Digital Capture or Capture One disks. Where is it located? When I turn on the camera, nothing happens other than the LCD screen showing that USB is connected. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
Advertisement Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 Hi ttriolo, Take a look here Direct Image Transfer to a Mac. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
TEBnewyork Posted August 26, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 26, 2007 The program called image capture on the mac.
andybarton Posted August 26, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 26, 2007 Buy a new card reader, and save the wear and tear on your USB socket on the M8. New card readers will read all new cards and specs. Image Capture is in the "Applications" folder. Unfortunately, the person who translated the instruction book did not check to see what the program is called in English. Guest guy_mancuso Posted August 26, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 26, 2007 Tony I'm going to jump all over you here so please do not take it personal but it is about the worst thing you can do, leave your 5 k camera out of being a transfer medium . Please run down to a Best Buy or someplace and just get a simple USB 2 SD card reader, you really don't want to play the game of transfering from the camera. Anything can happen here, I been down this road for many years and the nightmares i have seen doing stuff like this, please run to a electronic store and get a new reader which is most likely causing your issues to begin with. here are some readers that I KNOW work just fine with Macs http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/s.nl/it.A/id.742/.f?sc=2&category=45 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/486927-REG/Sandisk_SDSDBR2048R_2GB_SD_Card_with.html http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/352045-REG/Lexar_RW023001_5_in_1_Memory_Card_Reader.html

Thanks for the advice. I had no idea I was at risk transferring directly from the camera and I was only doing it out of desperation after I could not get either of my Lexar multi-format readers to recognize the cards. I'm not sure a new reader is the answer as the ones I have are both USB 2.0 and fairly new. I might give it a shot though for the small investment required. I really think this is a card compatibility issue as both readers can read my cheap-o Toshiba card just fine. BTW...... I'm in Athens, AL not Greece and we do have a Best Buy here. Thanks for the help.
andybarton Posted August 26, 2007 Share #7 Posted August 26, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have had problems with the Ultra III cards not being read by even new readers that I have bought. I have a Belkin one in front of me now and that's been fine. Then, when you knock it off your desk as it's transferring files, you'll only have a card reader on the floor, not your M8 - it's been done
carstenw Posted August 26, 2007 Share #8 Posted August 26, 2007 I have the Ultra IIs with built-in USB plugs. Work perfectly, and no need for a troublesome card reader. Even my Sandisk reader was flaky (also with other cards).

I had an older Lexar reader and it would not read the card if there was more then a gig of images on it. Once I picked up a new reader no problem on the Mac with my 4G Transcend cards. hdrmd Posted August 26, 2007 Share #10 Posted August 26, 2007 By all means get a card reader.Promaster makes one that reads Sandisk SD cards: $24.95 http://www.helixcamera.com/Digital/memorycard/pr8850.html I agree with Guy: avoid the problem and use a card reader. Guest guy_mancuso Posted August 26, 2007 Share #11 Posted August 26, 2007 I mean there is maybe no scientific proof and just logical proof that anything can go wrong here even a system error could cause the M8 to fry. or pulling the USB cord out, honestly i heard of so many bad things than just flat out stupid things happen. that i just advice folks to stay away from transfering all together. I shoot tethered a lot with the M8 and it's the same thing really but i would rather save that USB port for important things like shooting than downloading. now also we have talked about this one numerous times about card issues and once again i keep hearing the word Sandisk involved , now maybe because they are so popular but it seems every card issue and m8's has that damn name attached to it Sandisk. maybe try some Transcends or another brand
wilfredo Posted August 26, 2007 Share #12 Posted August 26, 2007 I've had no problems using the Extreme III, and Ultra II by Sandisk, with a USB 2.0 card reader on the IMAC. Cheers, Wilfredo Benitez-Rivera Photography
Shootist Posted August 26, 2007 Share #13 Posted August 26, 2007 Let me add that Sandisc cards are the most pirated cards on the market. Could be you have pirated cards. I use only Lexar cards for the simple fact I have never had any problems with them for years in any camera or other device.

I doubt that my Sandisk cards are pirated as I bought them from B&H but I guess anything is possible. Likewise, I have used Sandisk CF cards on my Canon 5D and 20D with not a single issue so I have come to trust the brand. I have seen a number of negative posts associated with the brand when used with the M8. Seems like an incompatibility issue to me. It may be that the camera is to blame and not the card manufacturer.
