graeme_clarke Posted March 16, 2021 Share #4 Posted March 16, 2021 I had the last model R180 f2.8 apo ROM and used it on an SL (601) with superb results. I sold it to help fund an SL90-280 and I know the buyer found it to be equally superb. I know my answer is for the earlier SL camera. There are several versions of the R180 lens so can I suggest you do more research as the earlier ones may not be as outstanding. From the price you mention I suspect this will be one of the earlier ones as the last model commands a much higher price. You will need an adapter - I have the Leica R-L which conveyed the ROM information from the lens to the camera. Older pre-ROM lenses and "dumb" adapters clearly cannot conduct information. Hope this helps a little! Graeme

Slender Posted March 16, 2021 Share #6 Posted March 16, 2021 The 11923 I used to have was a fun lens. Certainly not the "best" compared to the APO but it is lighter and much cheaper. The R to L adapter is going to cost you more than the one you found. Make sure its fungus and rattle free for this price. The barrel tends to unscrew with time, but you can tighten the screws super easily.

I use it for wildlife mainly, so much of the time it's wide open at f4, at 280, with a fast shutter speed with floating iso. Spot focusing is very accurate. Images are critically sharp. It is heavy but its length is not much greater than the 180+adapter. Glad I bought it. Graeme
ravinj Posted March 17, 2021 Share #11 Posted March 17, 2021 (edited) 16 hours ago, cirke said: Thanks but it does not answer to my question what is the best R 180 for SL2 ? The "best" R 180 for SL2 that is practical to carry around is the Leica APO Elmarit R 180 11273. There is also the ultra heavy and expensive Summicron F2 version that is optically stellar but impractical to carry around.
