I have been unable to find information on this device and its complete function.    I understand that it can be used as a hood for macro work.    There also seems to be some talk of using it as a slide copier but I have found nothing detailing components for this use.  The front appears to have a slide in holder for some unknown use.    Any information will be appreciated.

The 16557 is really just a hood for the lens used on the bellows ("compendium"). I think the front holder may be used for filters, but it is much too large and too thin for slides. Some years ago there was the same question in the german part of the forum. In this discussion someone had the theory that there was a project by Leitz to construct a special device which could take slides (or just the film?) but which was never realized. If someone is talented and has the right tools and material he might be able to construct such a device.

I had a Visoflex III with the Bellows II, a 90 2.8 Elmar head and eventually found the 16557 compendium shade. It has a spring loaded clamp to attach to the lens and a couple of flexible flat wire springs at the front for holding filters. As previously mentioned, they're not suitable for holding slides. Since it was an accessory piece and not included with the bellows, they have become hard to find. Prior to obtaining it, I used a screw in lens hood to shield from glare and it worked well. If you should find one, get it. It's a nice accessory to have but not essential.
