I purposefully not use the built in hood when shooting wide open in the hope of getting some flare.

Thank you. I’ve found that since it’s come back from its Leica CLA it’s behaving differently, especially with flare. I’m very pleased! I will keep this lens forever.

just for fun even thought I think I got a good copy from Japan, I sent my version 3 for CLA. And I've got a new M11P on the way - am excited to use it on a color cam (up to this point have been using it only on my M11M).

Nice! Are you going to get it 6-bit coded too?

I'm devastated and an idiot. I just got word from Ye who does the CLA, here's what he says: Your lens is not the pre-asph version.  It is the Summilux Asph 50/1.4 lens with an E46 thread. We do not work on this lens since it has a floating element design.  For future service, you need to send it to Leica USA. The lens is clean, we tested the lens with a digital M body and made sure it is in focus and produces good images.  The optics are clean; we cleaned the front and rear surfaces.

I looked back at the eBay listing, and indeed it says ASPH - how could I have missed that??? So now I'm going to sell that lens, and decide what I want to do.

Ye also said:  Perhaps wait a little.  Leica just released a reissue classic Summilux 50/1.4 lens.  Right now the price is high, wait a bit, and the price will go down. Do not buy the E46 pre-Asph, most of the lenses have opticaxl cement deterioration problem, only good for parts.

So I'm torn, don't know what to do.

It may come back with a different personality! Mine definitely flared differently prior to it’s CLA. Congrats on the M11-P, I’m sure you will enjoy it.

This explains why I once told you that you must have gotten a very good copy! 😄

As for what to do next, I'm afraid I can't help you. You need to think carefully about it. And if you're happy with the ASPH, you can always just keep it.

Sorry Brick, I read your reply to my post prior to reading your follow up post. Sorry to hear about the confusion. It’s definitely frustrating to buy something you were not intending to but if you enjoy it then maybe it was meant to be! Good luck with your decision making.

Sorry to hear it - and thanks for sharing the great photos here.

I personally wouldn't let the de-cementing fears put you off the amazing v3.   I have 2 copies, neither is decementing .

Just a good idea to view in person if you can (or a no questions asked return guarantee).  Shining a touch is easy to assess for clouding or de-cementing

I'm definitely going to sell my ASPH when I get it back. And after thinking long and hard about this, plus Ye's admonition against getting version 3 because of too many of them he's seen with lens separation, I decided two things: first I really want .7M min focus distance so that rules out versions 1 and 2 of the pre-asph. second, I re-read all the reviews of the new classic remake. and am willing to live with its added weight (which was the only negative I had of that lens), so I'm going to get it.

Now I just need to find one - all the camera websites in the U.S. that I've checked show it on backorder. I do have a contact with Leica so I'm reaching out to him

But I'll keep coming back to this thread to savor and enjoy all the fabulous, exquisite images you've all been posting.

Eventually I'll get the lens and post some of the images here.

Oh, and I've decided to keep my excellent copy of the Cron 50/2 rigid. I'll use it for film and also with my M11M, and I look forward to shooting the new 50 classic with my M11P!

That sounds good. Good luck with your search for a v4!
