Oh brilliant, thank you.  I will be hunting a V3.  Clem kindly messaged me and gave me some very welcomed advice. I love your work @evikne  your pics of whom I'm guessing is your daughter are just brilliant.

And of course E46 is filter size!  That helps.

v3 has .7M min focus distance which is why I got it rather than v2 which has 1M min focus distance.

FYI, Ye who is a Leica repair person who does CLA told me to stay away from v3, saying that they use a particular glue which deteriorates over time and causes lens separation which most repair people can't fix - can only be fixed by Leica. I ignored the advice and found a v3 that didn't have signs of that problem, and I don't expect it ever will because it won't be subjected to high temps.

Thank you, yes she is my daughter. She has to tolerate being photographed a lot. 😄

The diagram is very simplified of course. There are different colors and materials, and models that are rare and expensive. But the new Classic re-issue version (also called v4), is in a way a fusion of all, plus something new. Also worth considering if you'd rather have a brand new lens.

fusion of all ⋯⋯pondering what v4 offer  that v3 is lacking?

I haven't seen many direct comparisons, and I'm not good at interpreting MTF charts, but it apparently has a slightly more modern rendering in most respects. You can start by reading up in this thread:

The classic mount of v1 , updated coatings and it's new.

It looks like a lovely lens and one I would like to try at some point. The main negative for me is the weight and possibly longer focus throw? I've never used it but I much prefer short throws on my lenses for how I shoot , some may prefer the longer and more accurate throw though. It is also in my opinion, a sexier looking lens than the V3☺️

BTW, the best review I've read about the new re-issue is this one by Milan Swolfs. It answers most of the questions one might have regarding the differences to the older versions etc.

Tucked in the quiet charm of Ixelles, just around the corner from the everyday, lives a little épicerie where the lemons glisten like morning suns and fresh herbes speak in whispers.
Shot with the Leica M11-D and the timeless Summilux 50 pre-asph re-release.

Thank you for the mention @evikne
