I get equally sharp pictures with the 75 Summicron-SL at 1/160 sec. and mechanical shutter handheld either with IBIS on or off. The double lines the OP shows with IBIS on at 1/160 sec. are either due to a mechanical engineering defect in his copy of the camera or user error. Parallel recordings with my SL2 made the problem clear to me again. I assumed that the SL2s had a newer, better image stabilizer and I am irritated that Daniel had similar problems. It definitely is not always as pronounced and does also not happen always happen. So I still think, there are a few parameters which must come together. Just made some perfectly fine test shots, and then again got some slightly blurry. I've now written to Leica Customer-Service with a detailed description and the offer to talk. Daniel C.1975 Posted February 8, 2021 Author Share #25 Posted February 8, 2021 (edited) Hi, some more research via google has shown that the behaviour I've experienced seems to be visibility on many different brands. I found reports on Nikon Z7, Canon R5 and R6 and also Fuji. It always appears with certain lenses and certain shutter speeds, but all reports I've seen are mainly in the area of 1/80 to 1/180 second. There are improvements with certain FW-updates, but the main approach seems to be IBIS = OFF, except you need it or EFCS = ON (which we do not have). So its IBIS = OFF or Electronic Shutter (when suitable) to be sure. One of the theories is, that the IBIS can have issues with the high-frequency shutter shock coming from the mechanical shutter. BTW: Canon has admitted that a negative impact of IBIS and mechanical shutter can appear under certain conditions. So, nothing really new. But still not broadly known. The contact at Leica I've reached out to, meanwhile has forwarded my mail to the technical service department - let's see. Cheers Daniel EDIT: Olympus also has the problem and has solved it with the option to turn a function "shutter shock" on or off. After my mail and a at the same time received SL2-s for repair with the same issue, the quality department and engineering tested in different scenarios and according to my detailed description and where able simulate the problem. So Leica has acknowledged that there is the possibility of blurred pictures with IBIS, mechanical shutter and in a narrow shutter speed band under certain circumstances. They are now making further tests to get a better grip on the problem and are working on a solution for a future FW-update. Over all it was a very open and clear mail and also phone conversation. Thumbs up. Now let's cross our fingers that they are able to solve the problem soon and hopefully are able to implement it in the announced FW-update for the SL2-s. Regarding that FW-update I've also asked what spring means in particular, but got no clear date. When using the mechanical shutter stay below 1\80s or above 1/250s or use the electronic shutter or turn off the IBIS and don‘t bother with the first three choices 😁 I‘ve got used to it and if you forget it, it doesn‘t kick in always.
