MartinL Posted August 23, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Evidently a squeeze? blow? while in the half-case while in the camera bag. Went through crowds, public transport. Was in contact with it full time, but impossible to tell the moment of impact. Possibly from a nearby lens? But I've no clue otherwise. The Giotto screen protector was shattered, and the LCD lights up with irregular pattern unaffected by menu, image, etc. Useless for now. Packing up now to send to New Jersey. Any idea about turn-around time? Cost?
Advertisement Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Hi MartinL, Take a look here Broken M8 LCD. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Photoskeptic Posted August 23, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 23, 2007 If past experience is any guideline it won't be cheap. I busted one on a Pentax once, but at least it was fixable for less than the cost of another body. The problem is they must replace all the electronics attached to the LCD and not just the screen. Good luck and let us know the cost of the repairs when they send you the estimate.
jaapv Posted August 24, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 24, 2007 Insurance should cover this one.

jfaier Posted August 24, 2007 Share #5 Posted August 24, 2007 You were unlucky. i had something similar on a Canon 1Ds MK II. Canon replaced it and did a check of the entire system, for $195. I was amazed as I was dreading the worse case scenario. Good Luck! Sorry to hear it - I know it's a total bummer when you see it in the camera bag, all broken. MartinL Posted August 24, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted August 24, 2007 Thanks for the encouraging words and sympathy. I just shipped it off to New Jersey. I'll keep this list informed. Couple of weeks ago (after some procrastination) I added the M8 and lenses to my camera insurance policy. Today I called the agent because I was concerned that there might be something like a 30 wait period. Nope, it's insured- - -no deductible. (Just a word to the wise, and I suppose, to the foolish:) )
marknorton Posted August 24, 2007 Share #7 Posted August 24, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here's a picture of the back of the camera, you can see the LCD package and there will be the cover glass behind that. My guess is that it's something like an hour's work to replace it. Welcome, dear visitor! guy Posted August 24, 2007 Share #8 Posted August 24, 2007 Thanks for the encouraging words and sympathy. I just shipped it off to New Jersey. I'll keep this list informed. (Just a word to the wise, and I suppose, to the foolish:) ) Does this mean the US isn't covered by the "Leica passport" scheme? As I understand it, that insures the camera against accidental damage for a couple of years. Which, I must say, is unprecendented among any consumer electronics I own. But I'm in the UK. Guest guy_mancuso Posted August 24, 2007 Share #9 Posted August 24, 2007 M8's are not covered under passport warranties. They have a normal two year warranty against defects
guy Posted August 24, 2007 Share #10 Posted August 24, 2007 M8's are not covered under passport warranties. They have a normal two year warranty against defects Hi Guy! I'm away from home now, so (perhaps stupidly) don't have my paperwork with me. But I could've sworn I got a passport for the M8 as well as for the lens. I remember specifically because I was impressed that accidental damage was covered. But I may be getting muddled here (away from England too long = too much sun = mad dogs & Englishmen...) But could someone else from the UK comment?
doug_m Posted August 24, 2007 Share #11 Posted August 24, 2007 I believe that in the US there is a 2 year NON Passsport warranty for the M8 and that in the UK there is a 1 year Passport warranty. Can folks in the UK confirm this? Also in the UK do you get a warranty total of 2 years with 1 year being the Passport type and a second year of warranty that is NON Passport? Or do UK M8 owners only get a total warranty of 1 year all of which is Passport? What kind of M8 warranty does the rest of the world get? Gid Posted August 24, 2007 Share #12 Posted August 24, 2007 The UK warranty is two years. The first year also gets the passport warranty and that covers accidental damage however caused. Gid
gravastar Posted August 24, 2007 Share #13 Posted August 24, 2007 Although I received my camera in jan I still don't have any documentation (Leica is sorting it out through no fault of their own). However, during a recent trip abroad the chrome on the top plate was very very severely abraded. When I told my dealer about this he jokingly said I should have taken a hammer to it then Leica would have replaced it. Passports do not cover cosmetic damage. So I would assume the M8 has Passport cover in the UK. Bob.
marknorton Posted August 24, 2007 Share #14 Posted August 24, 2007 Bob, as a matter of interest, did you find out how much a new top plate costs?
Gid Posted August 24, 2007 Share #15 Posted August 24, 2007 I have just checked the conditions and cosmetic damage is not covered - it states "ceases to function or functions incorrectly from whatever cause including accidental damage" This is of course in the UK. pemayeux Posted August 24, 2007 Share #16 Posted August 24, 2007 I cracked the rear LCD, (cover only, menu still worked) on my Digilux 1 and Leica USA charged $295 to replace it. Has anyone noticed dust under their M8 LCD? I have some fine dust on side under the screen.
Guest Walt Posted August 25, 2007 Share #17 Posted August 25, 2007 Paul, I had this problem --a cone of very fine dust spreading from the lower right corner. This got worse and worse and finally made the image difficult to see in sunlight. Leica NJ replaced the camera. There are now several reports of this on the forum. eyeman Posted August 25, 2007 Share #18 Posted August 25, 2007 Just ran into a fellow M8 user who dropped his camera and broke the LCD. He told me that Leica charged $800.00 to replace the part and that the camera was in Solms for 4 months.
carstenw Posted August 26, 2007 Share #19 Posted August 26, 2007 I suppose that $800 is the worst case. There is a good chance that the damage from a drop would be greater than the damage from a push.
MartinL Posted October 4, 2007 Author Share #20 Posted October 4, 2007 Left a slightly fuller FYI on RFF. Briefly, the camera is back in my hands, around $330 for replaced monitor, focus adjust, and overall review. Good service from New Jersey Leica (with only a glitch or two).
