andybarton Posted January 27, 2021 Share #2 Posted January 27, 2021 Yes. It resets to zero when you open the back.

Are you mean the film counter will start count when pull the film advance lever no matter with or without film?
andybarton Posted January 27, 2021 Share #4 Posted January 27, 2021 Yes, it will increase by one every time you wind on, even if there is no film in the camera, until it gets to 40, where it remains until you open the door

Yes. The counter operates exactly the same way with or without film. It resets when you remove the baseplate.
a.noctilux Posted January 28, 2021 Share #6 Posted January 28, 2021 Not exactly the same as older M though... I wondered why the M-A counter stopped at 38, as my other M3/M4/M5 counters go to 40 ( even more with M2 or Barnack's 😔). At first when new I asked Leica for that, never found the answer 😁. Not a big deal though, just to live with that.
roelandinho Posted January 28, 2021 Share #7 Posted January 28, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) The counter on my M-A also stops at 38. I never get more shots on a roll anyway, so no problem for me.

105012 Posted February 1, 2021 Share #9 Posted February 1, 2021 I get 39 frames routinely on my M3’s, which has the traditional film loading system, with standard film cassettes (not IXMOO).

No, just an observation, not important as I use only commercial available 36 frames films. For long I don't use IXMOO, as more and more "ascetic" film user. Sometimes I can still wind on when the M-A's counter stops at 38, not annoying at all.

This plus IXMOOs don't fit in the newer cameras, a redesign of the counter mechanism, so that it stops at 38 may have been implemented.
