leonpro Posted August 23, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted August 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Apologies in advance if this has been discussed before, but I can't find a definitive answer if a UV filter affects photo sharpness (being another glass element in front of the lens) especially if used indoors. Â Also, people say it can be left on the lens all the time as protection, which I do. But any color shift of any kind when used indoors?
Advertisement Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Hi leonpro, Take a look here UV Filter - will it affect sharpness?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted August 23, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted August 23, 2007 Yes- it will affect sharpness. I will spare you the long theoretical explanation. No- you won't notice in actual use in 95 % of your shots. No it won't produce any colour effects, except if you have a very old non-UV blocked lens. Then it may reduce some blue haze in the distance. It may produce some extra flare, so use a lens hood. A real protective filter (Heliopan) has even less negative effects and is stronger.
leonpro Posted August 23, 2007 Author Share #3 Â Posted August 23, 2007 Thanks for info. The reason I asked is that I notice the photos are not as sharp as I want to be when shooting full coverage shots versus close-up/macro shots. Perhaps I need to close the aperture a little bit more to compensate. Might be a better trade-off than scratching the glass of the lens itself. Â I am using the Leica UV filter, btw, if it matters.
