mmx_2 Posted January 1, 2021 Share #81 Posted January 1, 2021 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) For the digital M-line, I would be very surprised if we see anything at all, the system is very mature as it is and still competitive in its niche. I do believe that we might see a new film M, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this rumored “cheap film M” actually is an updated M7 with electronic shutter from the M10 (and lightmeter and whatever more they can reuse), it could also be made from press moulded magnesium alloy to save cost. I would be surprised if they launch another mechanical film camera (we already have the M-A and MP for this). Given how the business is doing in general my bet would also be that 2021 will be a year focused on lenses :). A new Nocti-50 f1.2 for the M, release of the previously “launched” SL lenses not yet in production (basically what was I the roadmap for 2020) and maybe some new CL lenses. For a future M11, I would just like to see incremental upgrades from the M10, like better clip on EVF, faster processor, less power consumption, IBIS if possible (but unlikely), maybe some customization options. I’m still on the M10, and I only miss two things, one is spirit level (corrected with M10-P, but too much money to upgrade only for this feature) and the other one is a better EVF. The rest of the camera is near perfect, even the “lousy” battery is more than good enough for me. For most of the time I just shoot, for a critical session, I’d bring an extra battery. My hope is that Leica is working on a complete new SOC-chip with 5NM technology that integrates most camera functions on a single chip. This would open up for incredibly fast, responsive and yet power friendly cameras. Such a development would of require a collaboration with a partner, but ideally one should create one chip that covers the needs of Panasonic S-line, Leica SL-line, CL-line, M and Q-line, and just differentiate the lines with software. Don't buy it." could be a simple retort, if one is ever produced. My main point, though, is that, "The reason is that no M lens supports automatic aperture opening for focusing and then closing it for taking. It's a juggle that will feel awkward enough to scare the majority of people off of the concept." does not appear to be a coherent reason as to why it couldn't or shouldn't be produced. "I don't want it" is a much better reason! Perhaps you’re better off in the CL/TL department with your plea. Much easier to build that platform to your wishes

This feature makes M lenses (and all rangefinder-coupled lenses) first-class citizens and not "glass bricks" to the M. I'm sorry if you feel I am moving goalposts here but I thought here at M forum we would share the appreciation of rangefinder focusing at least. If I want TTL focusing with the associated benefits, the world is full of cameras that offer just that. I intended the above with my mention of rangefinder coupling, but noted. It doesn't change the core argument re: glass bricks and the general nature and utility of adapted lenses. I share appreciation for rangefinders too - I just think the reason (lack of automatic aperture) stated in the OP that Leica wouldn't produce an EVF M doesn't make functional sense. Much easier to build that platform to your wishes I'm making no such plea, only noting that it is a common and "valid" one. If there was an M11 which was nothing more than an M10 with an EVF, I would be happy for those who care about it and probably stick with the M10 series myself if choosing between one or the other. But both might be nice!

But both might be nice! Oh, that is a welcome clarification of your view. However, I would have found it more logical to upgrade the CL-platform with a more M-ish body and FF than what they did now with the SL2-S which cannot exactly be described as a compact, streetworthy camera.
