From the user manual:

• Can be used, but risks damaging the camera
Lenses with retractable tubes can only be used with their tubes extended, i.e. their tubes must never be retracted into the LEICA M8.
This is not the case with the current Macro-Elmar-M 90mm f/4, whose tube does not protrude into the camera body even when retracted. It can therefore be used without any restrictions.

• Cannot be used:
Hologon 15mm f/8,
Summicron 50mm f/2 with close focusing.
Elmar 90mm f/4 with collapsible tube (production period 1954-1968)

I can unequivocally confirm that the 50/2 Summitar, once mounted, can fully collapse into the M8 and M240. I have a Summitar and successfully collapsed it into both bodies (as I always have with with my Summicron Version 1 and my 50/2.8 Elmar-M).

However, as has already been mentioned, I always attach and remove those lenses fully extended from the body. Once mounted, they can be fully collapsed with no worries.

I know this is an old thread but I had similar concerns. I do find it odd that the manual states not to collapse  certain lenses yet mentions that the 21mm Super Angulon can be used but just won't meter (inner projection blocks the meter path). My Super Angulon (allowed on an M8) actually protrudes further than my 50mm f2.8 Elmar (not allowed on an M8). Seems that not extending as far as the Super Angulon would negate any chance of damaging the sensor or front curtain as the Angulon will not itself.
