We argue cameras, sensors and previously film emulsions but the quality of ambient light has a lot to do how the picture turns up. Similar portrait with same camera and lens if taken in England in December would look very different. Clear sky near the big body of water provides ambient with lot of direct and reflected light.

Only way to compare different sensors would be to take same scene under controlled lighting conditions, everything else is fanboy delusion.

Well - for B&W I would prefer the Monochrom, but the M 240 didn't do a bad job either.

At least I'm fine with it.

Thank you all for your honest opinions . I wish you all a Wonderful Christmas and Holiday and my the coming year bring happiness into  your life, Best Regards,

Hank

Thank you for having started this entertaining and interesting thread and I wish the same to you, too, Hank!

I have been a spectator here enjoying the to-ing and fro-ing of views and opinions duly expressed so perhaps it's about time I put in my tuppence-worth.

Personally I have absolutely no axe to grind in favour of either camp owning, as I am fortunate enough to do, an M Monochrom and an M-D Typ-262 so currently have both CCD and CMOS 'on tap'. Before the arrival of either of these I owned - and absolutely adored - an M9-P which, as we all know, can deliver the most wonderful results. After the M-D arrived it was not the quality of the files the M9 could produce which led to its departure but the very different (and to me preferable) shooting experience the screen-less M-D offered. I do very much miss my M9-P because I really loved the camera; it really felt like it was mine, but realised that it was never going to be chosen over the M-D. In retrospect I should have held on to it but, then again, why? Sentimentality?

Before I owned the M-D I didn't really understand what the whole CCD v's CMOS argument was about. Now I have a better understanding and, IMO and for the way I shoot and the subjects which tend to be my preference, it comes down to one main difference and that is between how the DNG files from the different sensors render. The M9M - and even more so the M9-P before it - generates files with a slight but distinct 'filmic' quality whereas the CMOS in the M-D has more of a 'silky' quality which, when added to the larger pixel-count, produces files which are more 'medium-format-like' in feel.

But both CCD and CMOS versions are superb tools. Use whichever suits your style to the fullest and Enjoy the fact that you own some of the finest cameras made in recent times.

May we all have a wonderful Festive Time and enjoy a great, healthy 2021!

Philip.

Philip  you so elegantly expressed  what so many of us feel , that regardless which camera we own,  there is nothing  better than Leica.

It's not the first thread where people express that they don't like the camera because it can record movies. I would really like to understand why the movie function can't be ignored with this camera.

There is a small movie button next to the shutter button that is absolutely unobtrusive. I never even pressed this button by accident and with my silver Leica I really forget that it's there. We have the tiny holes on top for the microphone, and then there is the menu. When I counted right, there are 36 menu items and there is only ONE that is solely for movies: that is the sound setting.

Please educate me why these three little things are a deal breaker.

In later firmware, you can in fact also disable the button.

Some completely miss the point of the M typ240 series.

They are the first digital M cameras to have an electronic viewfinder.

This allows true macro, proper and accurate framing, close-up photography, more accurate focusing, using micalibrated lenses focused properly, a horizontal level and real-time exposure curve...etc...and many other features including the fastest exposure and iso control.

These cameras allow many manufacturers lenses to be used on an M sensor...for example i use many Nikkor lenses which are excellent...particularly some zoom lenses.

These features were not available on any digital M until the type 240 series.

If this was lost on owners they don't deserve to have such an excellent camera...😝

For me, the M240 is the first real digital Leica M camera.

Of course you have M10, M10P, M10R, and many other great cameras will come in the future but I consider M8 and M9 more concept and trial cameras. The M240 is the first real modern digital M.

the only reason for this step: i was not satisfied with des results of the M240, i couldn't manage the colours. Now with M9 i am quite satisfied, although i still prefer using film.
