rbaron Posted August 21, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have been looking through the documentation that came with my current M8 (it is the third one I've had; the first two were defective and were quickly replaced for me by Leica US). On the side of the box there is a sticker in English, which of course I can read (I'm a lawyer and trained to do this sort of thing) :-) and it says: "Officially Distributed by Leica Camera Inc. - Please Be Sure This Package Contains The Leica Camera Inc. U.S. Warranty". I have looked through the box and documents and do not find 'the Leica Camera Inc. U.S. Warranty'. Further, now that I think about it, I do not remember seeing a warranty card or document with either of the first two bodies, which of course were returned to New Jersey with all documents included. On the bottom of the box is a sticker with the following in German, which I cannot read, and would appreciate someone translating for me: "Ausstellungsware: Funktionssicherheit lt. LEICA-Garantie wird gewahrleistet. LEICA CAMERA AG" I'm just curious. It is in my nature and training. ;-) Thanks, --Bob

Shootist Posted August 21, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 21, 2007 When you got your first M8 did you fill out the warranty card and send it in? Leica will keep the warranty card of a replacement unit and transfer the original warranty over to the new serial number. Even IF you did not send in the original warranty card Leica USA knows by now who you are and what serial # M8 cameras you have had. If you are in doubt about this call Liz at Leica USA and check. I must ask did they send you a complete unit/kit? Charger, battery, strap, cables and all? And if they did is that what you sent back? IE the complete kit. When I sent in my original M8 I only sent the camera in the fitted box, not the big box that contains all the other accessories. They, Leica, sent me a NEW Complete Kit. Which I returned to them as that was not what I sent in.
stunsworth Posted August 21, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 21, 2007 The first word is refering to it being demonstration stock isn't it?
carstenw Posted August 21, 2007 Share #5 Posted August 21, 2007 It is a demo camera. Where did you get it?
TEBnewyork Posted August 21, 2007 Share #6 Posted August 21, 2007 I picked my M8 up directly from Leica. On my receipt it said "pull cards" and when I asked about registration they told me that it was done for me.
rbaron Posted August 21, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted August 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) (1) I am curious about the English translation of the German language sticker described in my original post. (2) I registered my original body online, and printed the online acknowledgment of my registration and filter order. I also mailed in the 'warranty card' that came in the original box. I naturally kept a photocopy of the card I filled in and mailed. It says on it "Two-Year Warranty Application". Nowhere do I find the *terms* of the warranty. (3) As noted in my original post, the box I presently have (which contained replacement body #2) came from Leica US in New Jersey. Replacement body #1 came from the same place. My original M8 body came from an official Leica dealer in New York. I no longer have the boxes that contained the original new body nor replacement #1. They were naturally returned to Leica US in New Jersey by me, using FedEx. I hope this answers all of your questions.
jaapv Posted August 21, 2007 Share #8 Posted August 21, 2007 It was explained to me that cameras bearing this sticker were either used as demonstrators by the factory and rechecked before sending out, or pulled off the line for a full check. It may well be that Leica decided to give you a camera they were sure to be tested to the last dot to prevent any more problems. I once got a M6TTL bearing this sticker and could not see anything indicating previous use. Maybe it had been sitting in a glass case in the lobby in Solms for a while.... rbaron Posted August 21, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted August 21, 2007 It was explained to me that cameras bearing this sticker were either used as demonstrators by the factory and rechecked before sending out, or pulled off the line for a full check. It may well be that Leica decided to give you a camera they were sure to be tested to the last dot to prevent any more problems. Thanks, Jaap. I was in fact told this body had been specially checked in New Jersey before being sent to me, since it was my third try at getting one that actually worked beyond thirty days (first one) or thirty minutes (second one). I am still curious as to the exact translation. --Bob
jaapv Posted August 21, 2007 Share #10 Posted August 21, 2007 For display. Functionality according to Leica warrantee guaranteed. Leica Camera ltd. So it means, I suppose, that this is a camera that the retailer can use to demonstrate to his clients. I think they give those an extra check. It looks a bit foolish if it dies in the hands of a salesperson.

Westerwald-Leica Posted August 21, 2007 Share #12 Posted August 21, 2007 (1) I am curious about the English translation of the German language sticker described in my original post. "Ausstellungsware: Funktionssicherheit lt. LEICA-Garantie wird gewahrleistet. LEICA CAMERA AG" Here's the translation of that German phrase: "Display item. Functional safety according to LEICA warranty is ensured/guaranteed. LEICA CAMERA AG" "Gewährleisten" translates to ensure as well as to guarantee. It sounds ok to me.
