I shot this after i did a family portrait the other day , nothing special image wise except that it maybe the hardest for any camera to record as far as light ratio's . It is just extreme sun and deep deep shadows. First one is nothing being done to it, second is in LR working the controls and bringing down the highlights and boasting mid tones and getting detail in the shadows. pretty interesting on what you can pull out of the M8 files. 35mm cron

I use Lightroom nearly exclusively now- really like it and rarely need more functionality. That was a great example, Guy. Also, the black dress was not manipulated in any way? Just IR filter? Case closed.

BTW, still love the CV15, converts the M8 to a point and shoot.

As a final aside, my wife pulled out the M8 at a party the other day and a guy next to her said, "I can't believe you have one of those things..." He was a long time Leica user and the M8, a year later still draws wows.

Most importantly, the images do.

Fun stuff.

Guy,

First of all, I have been following your posts for some time as well as visiting your site and up until now haven't said how much I appreciate your posts and admire your work.

I have just finally bought an M8 last week (after some 30 years of M film photography) and also use lightroom along with CaptureOne. In the short time I have been using the M8 I find the adjustment possibilities in Lightroom wonderful, but if no adjustments are needed the "straight" conversion using C1 seems to me to pull more detail out of the file. This is only my first impression after too short a time to really know what I'm talking about. I have also tried importing the tif developed in C1 into LR and done further correction there but that is not a very smooth way to work.

regards, Maurice

Happy 6,000th! And don't change anything, Guy LOL LOL.

I share the same experience with you; I am using LR more and more.

On my monitor, the dress is dark blue, if you are referring to the dress of the girl on the left.... and not black. I wonder how the color would look like if no IR-cut filter was used.

Well there rayon on her and most likely polyester on Mick so it would certainly have gone to the magenta side, not to mention the other dress may have shifted also. Actually this is pretty pure to the scene. The dress does look very dark blue here that part might be some reflectence though, which would be normal for a shiney rayon dress.

Maurice thank you. I want you to check your sharpness settings though because LR does bring more detail out and C1 is more softer looking.

Maybe i will run a test with that image in C1 and LR today and post it , it would be a good example. I use C1 more for portraits and LR more for outside work.

Peter on the scene shots it was ISO 160 set on daylight I believe. i will double check though. Oops i was on Auto and no WB on the scene shot. It actually went a little to the blue side

Yes it is El Pedergal . We only were there for 15 minutes , 110 in the shade is not my idea of fun. Hate this heat . Anyway another quick example. I like the orginal because of the punch but if you need to dig into the shadows than it is there for your again first is the orginal

Have to say this is one area of the country where lighting ratios are at there worst and makes for a great test area for this kind of testing. It just does not get any brighter than anywhere I know in this country. Folks have the luxury of having overcast and such , here it either bright as heck or less bright. LOL

I have downloaded the trial version of Lightroom and am not finding it user friendly. What can it do that I can't do already in Photoshop 7 ? So many people speak higly of Lightroom but so far I'm not seeing the advantages. Any help would be gratefully received.

Anthony remember also ACR 4 which comes with CS3 is the same exact raw processing engine as Lightroom , so the same controls and features are there. So reality is you don't have to buy LR to get those controls. Now LR claim to fame is more on the management side of the house and setting up web galleries and such , so these are really only added features to the processing engine of ACR. But i could do the exact same thing in ARC, it is just not glorified like LR.
