Hi all,

New to the Leica Q2 system. Under profile settings, when I select the sharpness setting, there’s a handful of options. Is there in-camera sharpening when it’s set to standard? If not, does it digitally take away sharpness when I select medium or low? How does this setting work?

Also, under customize control menu, what does this setting allow me to do? It’s not very clear to me - What is the right wheel button setting?

I don’t personally adjust those controls, but I’m 99.9% sure they only affect jpg images out of camera. The RAW files contain all the native resolution possible and require some post processing to realize the best from the image. I use Adobe Lightroom and it does a great job. Others here use ON1 and other excellent programs. I only shoot RAW. Others like the OOC jpg’s for quick use of the images with little or no post processing.

The customize control allows you to assign different functions to the Right Wheel and Button for instance. I have the Button assigned to Self Timer, Magnification, ISO. I have the Right Wheel assigned to Exposure Compensation. I’ve not really understood assigning the Right Wheel to Auto so I leave it at Exposure Compensation and thats always available when I need it.

Welcome. Enjoy your new camera. While no camera is perfect, the Q2 brings tons of fun to use and takes great photos once you master the basics with it.

I do not have a Q2 but it sounds as if your talking about the cameras JPEG settings.

Sharpening is applied at all the settings so it is more a case of deciding what suits the user and how much editing you wish to perform on the JPEG after the image is taken.

I'm 100% sure that these settings only apply to JPG files, which makes them fairly irrelevant.
You bought (and spent a lot of money on)  a wonderful camera, capable of top quality results. Why waste that by using the JPG output, which will throw away half the data and severely limit the flexibility in postprocessing?
Out of camera JPG files have their use, for instance if you want to upload quickly to your phone to send the image (for war correspondents and social media) In that case the DNG + JPG option is practical, as you will retain the full quality file for later use. Some users like to have an OOC JPG in postprocessing as a reference point. There are also a number of users who hold the raw file in unjustified awe, as being more complicated or slower to process. This does not correspond to the truth. In fact, it is rather difficult to tweak a JPG file  and retain a modicum of quality.

Michael furtman and ken rockwell shoot jpegs and their images are way better than most of the pictures in the various forum galleries.

Why is that?

People say "you have this top camera so why shoot jpeg?" but why not get a camera with higher resolution? or even a medium format camera if your really serious about photography?

Better still get a fast and accurate auto-focus camera.

The OP has not returned to the thread so i guess its just a "wind up thread" to stir up the old jpeg hatred but if he was genuine you have to say the forum has been totally useless in being of any help at all.

Great, thank you so much!

I do have to say though, when I adjust contrast - it seems that there is a difference in levels of contrast when changed. So I can’t help but question that something has to be changed when adjusting this setting when shooting RAW. But I trust your judgement and am leaving it as is for now. Kind of surprising that there isn’t a true answer to this unless I reach customer support maybe?

The camera displays a jpg image. That’s what you’re seeing. The RAW file downloaded to the computer will be unchanged.
