Gerard Posted August 21, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi folks, Is an M8 with dust visible behind the LCD protective screen to be avoided? If not, any idea how much it would cost to have the unit stripped and cleaned? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. Darth

jaapv Posted August 21, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 21, 2007 I would not do it myself, but I imagine it cannot be too hard to remove. The thing is just stuck on. And it does not impair picture-taking. It might be a good bargaining point.
marknorton Posted August 21, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 21, 2007 If they have some magic method to remove the glass, such as inserting a tool along the edge and levering it up without damaging the finish on the frame surround, I guess it would be quite easy. Otherwise, it's a 30 minute job and something like 25-30 screws to split the clamshell and get to the back of the cover glass to clean or replace. The worst part is that the leatherette has to be peeled back to get at the screws which hold the clamshell together. If it happened on my cameras which haven't been taken apart, I'd live with it. Guest Walt Posted August 21, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 21, 2007 This is a known problem with the camera and, I believe, suggests a leak into the camera interior. The dust leak starts at a corner and spreads in a cone shape towards the center of the LCD. I don't know where you are located, but Leica USA has replaced cameras with this problem. Three or four of these have been reported on this forum.
