Please pardon a stupid question.

But, what is the difference between the 11606 and the 11677 models of this elmarit 28mm lens?

I can't seem to find the defining differences yet....both are ASPH and from what I read, both have screw mount lens hoods.....but from what I read, same optics?

Thank you in advance,

cayenne

difference

Leica revised both the 28mm Summicron and Elmarit around 2016? to better meet the demands of digital sensors. 11677 is the current lens.

In one credible test, it suggests improvement in some areas and not others, so need to check out which best suits you - although I expect you will be hard pressed to see any difference 95% of time.

11606 has a clip on lens hood whilst 11677 has a screw mount hood.

Thank you...you wouldn't happen to have a link or know the name of that test you mentioned would you?

As another poster on this thread mentioned, I'd read some things on the internet that said the only difference was a clip on lens hood (old) vs screw mount lens hood (new)....

If there's optical differences, I'd like to know....as that they seem to be about the same price used for the most part.

Thanks for all the info...still researching!!

:)

name of that test

It was Sean Reids subscription site. The subscription will more than pay for itself as you ponder lens and camera options.

The changes were more substantive than 'another poster' suggested.

This is what PC Magazine says:

The new version of the 28mm puts up better resolution numbers at f/2.8—2,497 lines using Imatest's center-weighted evaluation. This is an uptick versus the 2,311 lines the previous version of the lens delivered, although not one we consider to be significant. Where the improvement is apparent is at the edges of the frame. The newer Elmarit-M records 1,552 lines at the periphery, while the older lens shows 1,347 lines. Neither is a tack sharp result—we want to see 1,800 lines at minimum from a 24MP sensor—but it's good to see the improvements, even modest ones.

Stopping down to f/4 nets results that are sharp from center to edge. The average score at f/4 is 3,060 lines, and while the periphery isn't as sharp (2,382 lines), it still passes muster. Compare that with the older Elmarit ASPH., which shows a 2,376-line average, but still lags behind at the edges (1,897 lines).

The advantages of the updated lens are lessened at narrower apertures. It shows 3,304 lines on average at f/5.6, with edges that are strong at 3,140 lines. The older lens shows around 3,100 lines on average, with 2,700-line edges. You're not going to notice a difference unless you're taking a really close look at big prints.

Resolution peaks at f/8 (3,350 lines) and holds up at f/11 (3,167 lines). I'd recommend avoiding f/16 (2,725 lines) and f/22 (1,147 lines), as diffraction cuts into image quality quite a bit.

There's just a little bit of barrel distortion, 1.2 percent. It's barely worth noting for a wide lens. There is a vignette, which isn't surprising given the wide-angle coverage and svelte build. At f/2.8 we see a -2.6EV drop in illumination at the corners of the frame, as compared with the center. The deficit drops to -2.1EV at f/4 and settles in a noticeable, but not extreme, -1.5EV at f/5.6 and narrower f-stops.

The 28 Elmarit-M ASPH is super sharp, with hardly any distortion. I nevertheless settled for the V4 version to accompany my 50 Sonnar ZM, simply because it has the same 46mm filter size (the 28 Summicron was out of price range at the time). Something you might consider if you fill up your lens quiver.  I shoot film and digital, and so carry filters and from what I gather Monochrome shooters do as well.
The 50 Sonnar ZM is my absolute favorite 50 for Leica - something to consider.

this is the last image i took with my m8 and 28mm elmarit which i think ia a version lll . this is the lens i use most , as it corresponds to a 35mm

on the m8 . this was taken at iso 1250 , so there is a bit of noise that i don't think is distracting . staying at home with the virus , i have just been

photographing around the house .
