I was talking to a local Leica dealer recently and I said that I wished Leica would offer a black paint M-A (I have a black chrome M-A but would love a black paint version).  He pointed me to the following page on the Leica USA web site and said that he believe's it's possible to send in a black chrome camera and have Leica convert it to black paint:

https://us.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-M/M-System-Service/Redesign

This page does seem to imply that might be possible, but I can't say I've ever heard anyone mention this before.  I searched this forum and didn't find any mention of it either.

Is it actually possible to do this?  If so, I find this a bit surprising given that Leica has discontinued it's a la carte program.

I can only imagine how expensive it would be if Leica were willing to do it...

Well, I answered my own question.  I emailed the Leica USA repair dept and they said they will convert a black chrome camera to black paint.  I'm shocked.

In terms of cost, the camera most be sent to Germany for evaluation before an estimate is provided.

Has anyone here done this conversion?

If they'll do the conversion, I wonder why you can't just order a black paint M-A when buying the camera?

Wait until you see the cost! Guesstimate?  I would say $4-5k

It can't be that much, can it?  If that were the case I could just buy a new black paint MP and keep the M-A as is ;)

I doubt they will 'convert' your current cameras finish, they will replace the top and bottom plates etc. and fit new leather.

I'm sure you're right.  That's what I meant by 'conversion'.
