Different kind of "birds", but wanted to share settings I've had more success with. Wildlife AF profile, AFc & tracking focus mode.

I did caught the sight of a non-organic engle using SL2's AFC / Tracking mode w. dot sight device.

How about sharing your AF settings?

I find that AFc and zone focus works best for me but only for bigger birds. Nothing works with smaller birds so far.

On the 90-280mm, AFC with zone focus or tracking worked well for BIF. On the 150-600mm, I've been successful with AFC with tracking so far. I need to carry out more test.

Its strange with 150-600 on tracking for me, it tracks the bird but it thinks its in focus when its not. I can literally see its blurry but its locking into the movement of the bird. Very strange....

That is because AFC is selected. The priority is in getting the pics and not 'in focus'. Some have selected AFS (must be at medium drive speed & not faster) for continuous shooting and shared their experience to have higher focus success rate.

Interesting, but wouldn’t that mean it’s not going to change focus after your hit the shutter even if the bird is moving? I thought the whole point of tracking is to have AFC

No. The SL/2/S cameras will lock focus (ie not continue to focus on subsequent frames) only when 'Drive High' speed is selected as indicated in Manual.

In that case, whats the benefit of afc is comparison to afs, shouldnt I just use afs always?

There is also the flip side of the coin that the trigger do not respond when the focus is not achieved. In real life, the difference is not great as you can still get focused pic but the focus point just isn't on the spot you wanted.

I'll try staying on AFs with zone and tracking to see if I increase the hit rate tomorrow!
