michali Posted October 11, 2020 Share #1 Posted October 11, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Spring's arrived in the S Hemisphere, I've been watching this African Masked Weaver (Ploceus velatus) in my garden building a nest, as he's done every spring for the past several years. Here are some images of last spring's endeavours: Weaver Nest He expends an incredible amount of energy and effort to build the nest, it takes him about 2 days from start to finish. The female will then come along and inspect the nest. If she doesn't like it she rips it apart, and the poor guy has to start all over again.....he'll build 4 or 5 nests over several days, only one of which will be used. Somewhat similar procedure to the Eurasian wren; the male makes several (up to ten) nests, and the lady picks the best. A downside for the first lady is that the male may encourage another lady to settle on one of the remaining nests...
