Chaemono Posted October 3, 2020 Share #1 Posted October 3, 2020 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) The two cameras are really not comparable. The CL is tiny and, therefore, with some lenses pocketable. It's also a lot of fun to shoot and produces very malleable files with impressive recoverability of shadow and highlight detail. In addition, the CL's ISO 3200 is very useable which is quite an achievement for APS-C. The CL files do, however, require more work in post for color, IMO. While they look bold out-of-the-box, the magenta/red dominates a bit too much for my taste. The S5's colors, on the other hand, are very subdued in overall flat looking RAWs and skin tones don't require much work in post. EV was set to -2/3 on both cameras for most of the pictures and the shutter speed always matched in A mode amazingly. The CL was shot with the 50 Summicron-SL wide open and the S5 with the 75 Summicron-SL wide open Links to download the RAW files are included. Chaemono Posted October 3, 2020 Author Share #2 Posted October 3, 2020 Now the processed files. It took me a bit of work to remove the magenta/red/orange from the CL files and I didn't completely succeeded. Boojay Posted October 3, 2020 Share #3 Posted October 3, 2020 Interesting comparison. Guess what we need to see is low light, night time shooting, and where the IBIS and possibly better ISO handling comes in. Lots of chat about the size of the S5, it's still a chunky lump compared to the CL as you say, the weight is far more about the lens that is attached, maybe the 1.8 Primes from Panasonic will be a good match with the S5. I took it out today along with the SL2, however, it has been raining cats and dogs all day, windy and cold. The S5 stayed in the bag, couldn't risk it (if it was mine I might have tried it), all those dials looked a bit too risky for the amount of water around. No such worries with the SL2, though lost the touchscreen capabliity as it needed a windscreen wiper! Look forward to more comparisons.
Chaemono Posted October 3, 2020 Author Share #4 Posted October 3, 2020 I won’t do lowlight comparisons between the CL and the S5. The S5 has the best lowlight capabilities of any FF 24 MPx camera I’ve seen because of its extremely wide exposure latitude. Shadows can basically be pushed to the max from ISO 100 to 6400 with no regrets. My wish for Christmas, besides that Covid should disappear, is an SL2-mini with the same button layout and the sensor and IBIS of the S5.

If the S5 could shoot M lenses as well as the SL or SL2, I'd put the idea of getting a SL to bed, and go with the S5. M lens compatibility is the only reason the SL is on my list of potential next cameras along with the S1 and S5. Do you happen to have any M lenses you could test with the S5? 🙂
