I am in favor of them (1.4x or maybe 1.7x), but it is not easy to get comparisons. Maybe it is asking too much, but could you make a comparison with this great lens: The Contax 300 plus 1.4x extender versus Contax 300 on SL2 in APS-C mode (or with manual cropping if you prefer (it is possibly more flexible)). I recently posted some images taken with the SL2 & Carl Zeiss 300mm f2.8 Apo-tessar & Zeiss Mutar lll 1.4x converter. Lazy Spring Afternoon @caissa asked me to do a comparison between the Zeiss 300mm plus 1.4x extender vs Zeiss 300mm on the SL2 in APS-C mode. #1 Zeiss 300mm plus 1.4x extender. michali Posted September 28, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted September 28, 2020 (edited) Please click on the image; on the cropped images one can see that the IQ overall is superior (sharpness, micro contrast & detail) with the 1.4x TC vs the SL2 in APSC mode. caissa Posted September 28, 2020 Share #5 Posted September 28, 2020 (edited) I see that he is cross-eyed. Does this have an influence on the result ? 🤣🤪🤓😂😁🥳😎 Thank you for the comparison. I hope also Mr. Karbe sees the result and will agree that an extender (1.4x) would be a useful add on to the SL 90-280 Tele Zoom . Stuart Richardson Posted September 29, 2020 Share #6 Posted September 29, 2020 Agreed! The other thing a TC can give you over cropping is that, even if it is not as sharp as the lens alone, you get better noise performance and smoother tonality, as you are using the whole sensor. This can be really important. I feel like the race for absolute optical purity is counterproductive in this case. I am sure they could design amazing TCs if they wanted to...the APO extenders in the R system were superb, and it has been 20 or 30 years of optical advancement since they were made...
