Dreaded dust! Advice please

I work in B&W and home develop...all is fine but when I scan my negs, no matter how much I blow dust off/etc etc the scans have loads of dust, I’m using a canon 9000 mk2 flatbed and wonder if that is the reason, would I be better off with one of the dedicated 35mm plustek machines?...what are you all using?   (I’d keep the canon as I also scan 6x6. But 35mm is driving me nuts!

Flatbeds do attract more dust, each time you open the lid it sucks dust onto the bed. Try a spray of Windolene with a lint free cloth or use wipes, then when you dust off don't point it near fabrics, if you are at a desk point the air into the centre of the room. The key with dust is not to raise it, a dusty desk doesn't mean dust on the negs, but 'tidying up' gets it up into the air.

If you’re in a dusty environment then dust suppression is key. I wouldn't be looking at the scanner in the first instance?

Sadly I only have a dusty study to work in, I discovered that what I thought was a clean flatbed was , as we say in Scotland, MANKY........a good anti static clean later and things are much better but the point raised by 250swb is true, everytime it is opened, more stuff gets sucked in....so, I’ll keep the canon an for my 6x6 stuff (though thinking of stopping that) and have just bought a Plustek dedicated 35mm scanner for my Leica work...not dear and slower but great results.

 

thanks for the advice ......now, might just think about selling off the Hassy stuff but I know I’ll just ‘waste’ it on more wetzlar goodies !  Ha ha
