andybarton Posted August 28, 2020 Share #1 Posted August 28, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) The highest, deepest and longest tunnel on Britain's canal network. It takes the Huddersfield Narrow Canal through the Pennines. It's about 3 1/2 miles long. I have been through many canal tunnels in my time, but not this one, the daddy of them all. You have to have a "chaperone" from the Canal and River Trust accompany you on the journey, which has to be booked 3 days in advance. http://www.penninewaterways.co.uk/huddersfield/standedge6.htm It takes between 2 and 3 hours to pass through, but would have had to have been "legged", back in the day. Now, that is hard work... https://canalrivertrustwaterfront.org.uk/history/legging-it/ Eastern entrance:- Welcome, dear visitor!
