It is generally not that tricky if you have to set it up. One trick I do, which is very straightforward and effective is to just take a piece of good glass (museum glass for frames works well) and sit it on top of two boxes or something similar and put the light table under it. The glass is easy to clean and keeps perfectly flat, and any imperfections on the light table will be out of focus, as well as most hot spots. Glass is great because in addition to being able to keep very clean, you can easily mask and tape the negative without much worry about damage or residue.
