Lew Posted August 24, 2020 Share #1 Posted August 24, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm just getting ready to update my firmware and looking at the options to format the sd card: Yes, Overwrite, No. What the difference supposed to be? Yes seems to do nothing at all, Overwrite takes ages (I assume this is a true format) and No does the same as Yes. What's up with this?
Advertisement Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 Hi Lew, Take a look here M Monochrom format menu option. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
a.noctilux Posted August 25, 2020 Share #2 Posted August 25, 2020 Hello Lew, I'd just format not too big SD (16GB is fine) card in computer, then dowload the firmware on it from Leica website, at root before putting the SD card in my Monochrom. As it is said in the Manual - formating just delete the direct access to the files, while overwriting totally delete to files. Overwriting can be up to 60 minutes (due to the card and amount of files) and it is recomended to check the battery life before overwriting. Also (!) it is recomended to format the card in the camera even when you formated it using computer or anything else. I always use just a format option (i format the card only in the camera after transport all files to computer) and never use overwriting (because i dont know why to spend more time on it). My guess is that when a card have not much space left it starts deleting previousely "formated" files totally - so it happens smoothely woithout being noticed by you (instead of overwriting function). Lew Posted August 25, 2020 Author Share #4 Posted August 25, 2020 I am not familiar with "direct access to files." When I examine a Format - Yes SD card in Windows File Explorer, the files are still there and they are still there in Adobe Lightroom, available for import. Plus, I can still view them on the camera's LCD via "Play." On the other hand, Format - Overwrite puts the camera in an infinite loop: the progress bar moves all the way from left to right and then starts over again. a.noctilux Posted August 25, 2020 Share #5 Posted August 25, 2020 Make sure that the "lock" slider is not in lock position on your SD card. What is the card's brand/type ? What Windows version ?
