Thank you, very useful.

I agree that the visoflex on the M is pretty weak. I only use the rangefinder, but then you can't focus-and-recompose at wide apertures without a lot of guesswork.

Have you tried using the touchscreen to set the focus point for the manual lenses, or always the joystick?

No, I have disabled the touchscreen to set focus out of fear I will accidentially reset focus with my nose/cheek when the camera is up to my eye. 🙂

How do you set that up? I've got a SL (not SL2) and can't find it in the manual.

I'm pretty sure I saw that setup in one of the Reddotforum SL601/SL2 system tutorial videos on YouTube but let me dig around to try to find the menu settings.

I am not sure if this works on SL601, but in the SL2 the setting sequence to enable focus ring magnification is as follows (page 152 of the English manual).

"ENLARGEMENT IN MF MODE

The larger the details of the subject are shown, the better you can assess their sharpness and the more accurately you can focus. This function can be automatically activated during manual focusing or can be accessed independently.

ACCESS VIA THE FOCUS SETTING RING

Turning the focus ring will automatically enlarge a image section.

  • â–¸  Select Focusing  in the main menu

  • â–¸  Select Focus Assist

  • â–¸  Select Auto Magnificationn

  • â–¸  Select On

  • â–¸  Turn the focus ring"

Near as I can tell, the SL1 only does this via the BL button.

But this only works with L mount lenses. M lenses can’t transmit this information, and there’s no focus cam to trigger things.  With the M lenses you can assign any button to this function and save to a profile.

Yes, I mentioned that caveat in an earlier post as the adapted M and LTM lenses have no mechanical coupling to the camera body.
