Mikep996 Posted August 13, 2020 Share #1 Posted August 13, 2020 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I've seen several recent threads which got me to wondering...do folks print photos or only view them on computers/TV screens? We recently had a party where I took iPhone pics as the party was going on and immediately loaded them as a slide show to appear on our 60+ inch TV while the party was going on and I added more as the party progressed. Lots of favorable comments. But that's not the point! The point (question) is, do folks here actually print images as we did in the film/darkroom days or just view them on some sort of display? I have to admit that I haven't printed a pic in at least 15 years though occasionally I get a hankering to print (mostly) BW images just to do it. But the issue becomes, as a non professional, what do you do with the prints? It's not like most of us have enough wall space to accommodate them. I end up with a LOT of pics on storage media which ends up no easier to find than a shoebox full of pics! Edited August 13, 2020 by Mikep996
Advertisement Posted August 13, 2020 Posted August 13, 2020 Hi Mikep996, Take a look here Do you print images?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jwr50 Posted August 13, 2020 Share #2 Posted August 13, 2020 Yes, I do print some -- not a lot, but some -- on my Epson Stylus Pro 3880 printer. It's perhaps not quite as satisfying as the old darkroom days, but what you can do with Lightroom/Photoshop and a good printer is really pretty amazing . . . far more than I could ever do in a darkroom. My largest prints have been 17x21. I have shared prints with family and friends and have hung a few around the house. Lately, I have gotten back into shooting both B&W and color film (on an M3, M6TTL and a Hasselblad 501cm), processing and scanning that film at home and printing some of those images as well. Those cameras still perform beautifully, and it's nice to see some of the results in a print.
Jeff S Posted August 13, 2020 Share #3 Posted August 13, 2020 This is the M10 part of the forum. If you migrate over to the Digital Post Processing section, you’ll find that many of us print, and have active discussions about all sorts of related topics. For me, the goal has always been a print worthy pic, darkroom and now digital. I mat and frame the best ones... for gift, sale or personal use, for which I rotate works to keep viewing fresh, along with collected works from others. Portfolio drawers, cabinets, etc provide storage of prints and supplies. Don’t even ask about the book collection.... or vinyl. Some hobbies require space. 😳 Jeff
Stein K S Posted August 13, 2020 Share #4 Posted August 13, 2020 (edited) I am just a happy amateur myself. And also with limited wall space... even if I include family and friends 😉 But yes; I do print! I do feel that if my only use of photos were through digital media/screens, I would have a hard time ¨explaining¨ my choice of gear... First of all I do have a number of photo frames on my wall... but with changing motives in them. I do also give away photos to family and friends at a lot of occassions... framed as an ¨ad-on gift¨ or unframed as birthday cards or christmas cards. Media are to 80% are in colour on regular Epson Luster, but I also print some b&w on Hahnemuhle Photorag or Hahnemuhle Baryta. Using a Epson P800. An important part of my hobby includes cutting my own passepartouts. This is both fun and it also provides quite some creative freedom! PS: saw Jeffs rightful comment about where to post too late... sorry! Regards, Edited August 13, 2020 by Stein K S
J.Nordvik Posted August 13, 2020 Share #5 Posted August 13, 2020 I print a little bit with my Epson Pro 3880. Printing is an hobby in it self. It is not so simple as to press "print" and a perfect print comes out. You have to invest time to learn it. Can be quite frustrating at times, but then you get the satisfaction of a good print. Everyone with a big format printer will soon find that there are not enough walls for all the prints, and framing them all is way too expensive . So what to do? if you live in a rural area like me with a garage then you can just nail them on the wall. Or you can use KAPA Fix, or you can use MDF (like in my picture, painted white). KAPA is the easiest, but MDF can be much cheaper if you can cut it yourself. Welcome, dear visitor!
