Panasonic Summilux 1.4 impressions and examples (pictures)

I'm no tester, but I thought I would post some examples taken with this lens. I took it on holiday with me to France, and for a wander around when I got home.

Impressions first. This is a bulky, heavy lens. It is solidly made, and "feels right". I used it on my Olympus e-400. It obviously dwarfs this body, but the two together make a compact set. The lens hood almost doubles the lens in length. It comes supplied with a lens pouch, but frankly this is disappointing in quality, and has stayed in the box. The Olympus pouches supplied with their pro-line 4/3 lenses are much better quality.

Another little oddity is that the Panasonic end cap is loose on anything other than the Panasonic lens. I have replaced it with an Olympus cap because I had a couple of times when I found it loose in the bottom of my bag, and the back of a lens "naked" as a result.

Focussing is quick, and sure. I couldn't get it to hunt at all. The first three images below were taken in France - the first in Notre Dame Cathedral in Boulogne, the second in a sand sculptures exhibition in Le Touquet, and the third in La Coupole V2 rocket base near St Omer. All were taken handheld, without flash. The fourth image was taken in Guildford, and the fifth is the proverbial 100% crop for all you pixel-peepers out there. To be consistent I have auto-levelled and auto-contrasted all images, but done nothing else beyond sizing to appear here.

Overall, I like this lens. It is heavy, though, and I am not sure I would carry it every day. I also have the Olympus 14-45 and 40-150 lightweight "kit" lenses, and the pro-spec 14-54 and 50mm macro. The 25 is a good compliment to this group, providing low-light capability. I'll continue to play about with it, and post the results in the usual place.

Regards,

Bill

I'd be interested in some shots showing the Bokeh at full-wide-open with a focused subject relatively close by. Also, got any portraits or shots of people?

Iron - try the following shot for a focused nearby subject - from the forums - 8 July

Also - although I haven't got any "proper portraits" (not my scene) I do have this informal shot of a friend (f2.8 I believe)

I'll continue working with it, and post the results. I haven't bought it as a people-lens, though - for that I would rather use the 50mm f2.0 or my M7 and 75 or 90.

Regards,

Bill
