Hi all,

My Leica SL2 has significant infinity focusing issues with 24-90 Vario Elmarit. Specifically, whenever I'm focusing on an object even remotely far away, my focus simply doesn't work - it just cannot focus on a building across the street in broad daylight, where with Canon 5dII I had at least 50% hit rate. Does anyone have an idea on why this would happen? If so, Is there a way to fix it or is it just an inherent issue with the camera/lens combo?

Best,

Bruno

I'm having issues with all AF settings, and on MF setting, at infinity nothing is in focus (unlike my M lenses where at infinity, well, infinity is in focus which is kind of what I expect).

If you're interested in the modes I have issues with
AFs | Zone
AFs | Field
AFs | Spot
AFc | Zone
AFc | Field

My take is that it's somehow a lens issue, but for the life of me can't figure out how/why.

Best,
Bruno

Is it possible it is somehow stuck in macro mode?

This would explain everything!!!
I've never seen the macro mode in the menus though? How can one enable/disable that?

I need to have another think.....

MF works?

Kind of - it works from close distance to infinity, however it seems to go far away past infinity.

Ie you can focus on the buildings - just not when the camera says infinity.

Yes.
It actually does say infinity, but it's a VERY narrow field before it goes out of focus again

If you use autofocus and turn the focus ring - and then look on the top screen it should tell you the focal range.  Does that look accurate?

Yes, (I think so) up until infinity. The far away buildings are in focus at the very beginning of infinity, but if I move the ring a tiny bit (<1/8 of a turn further) everything goes out of focus again, whilst the camera is still indicating infinity.

Have you turned off all AF profiles, ‘intelligent’ AF, etc?  Are you using back button autofocus or shutter button activation? Have you turned off focus aids... auto magnification, etc?  I would keep it simple for testing, using single shot mode, etc.

I’ve not had any focus issues with my 24-90.

Yeah - everything is turned off and manual focus still has the same issues, autofocus as well.
No idea what it could be, other than some focus by wire issue, as the focus goes way beyond infinity (which would explain the issue with autofocusing as well).

Bjuncek,  When I had the SL2 and SL 24-90 lens the same issue happened to me.  Leica Tech Rep told me three things, first try gently wiping the lens contacts with a soft cloth;  second do a total camera reset with the lens attached (there is a function in the menu that allows you to do it under function #6).  Last, if this didn't fix the problem, you need to send the lens to Leica with a description of issue.  In my case, they simply sent me a new SL 24-90.  Both the camera and lens are most excellent and usually highly reliable.  But even with many things today; like Ferraris or Porsche...things can go wrong.  Hope the reset does the trick.  r/ Mark
