I have just noticed what looks like a smear of oil on the inside of the EVF viewfinder. It does not show up on the screen or on the DNGS (thankfully). But when I look throught the EVF viewfinder there it is, about a quarter of the way into the frame, it looks like some kind of oily rad was passed over it... Impossible to remove from the outside...

Anyone else seen this defect?

thanks

I had what appeared to be delamination, starting from the upper left corner. It required a new replacement EVF which was carried out in Germany.

This is sadly a great description of what my EVF looks like.

That's sad to hear. Hopefully your Leica Shop and/Or Leica itself is generous to fix that problem.
Good luck with that and let us know how it turned ou?

Thanks Chris!  I will keep everyone updated.

What's the current thinking on the best Leica service centers?  New Jersey or Wetzlar?  Or both good?

In the UK, I went to Leica UK in London who examined the camera and then sent it to Germany for the EVF replacement. Initially, London thought they could fix the problem. I would adopt this approach in the future unless the fault was covered by warranty. My choice then, would be to work directly with my dealer.

Call or email LeicaUSA customer service or repair first - explain what is going on and ask their advice. It's very likely they will tell to send it to them first - Wetzlar also might tell you to send it to nearest repair center first. If a LRC can't do it, then it will be sent to Wetzlar

My Leica Q developed the EVF fault described here by many, it is called delamination.

I contacted Leica Mayfair customer care and they agreed to replace the EVF for £210.

I sent it to them Royal Mail - next day, tracked and insured £12.65 on Thursday 24 FEB.

My Leica Q was repaired and returned 4 days later incl. Sat and Sunday. Delivered on Mon 28FEB

Thank you Leica Mayfair, that's Customer Care.

I had the same issue with my Q. The Leica service centre in Australia were not able to do the repair so the camera had to be sent to Leica in Germany. It arrive this week but I am still waiting on a quote for repair. Great to hear you had such a quick turnaround. Unfortunately being in Australia, I'm looking at 8-10 weeks without my Q

i have also something like smear on my viewfinder and it is hard to keep it clean. In my opinion the problem is, that even if you use a soft cloth to keep the viewfinder clean on some day it will be dull / blunt and the anti-reflection coating will be wiped away...

On a Leica M this should be no problem, because

1) the glass in the viewfinder is maybe a real glass and not made of plastic and

2) I think it can be replaced.

But on the Q you have to replace the whole viewfinder even if you just need a new glass. Or is there a way just to replace this part?

It is worth your searching this forum for previous discussions of this problem. I don't think you can solve it by cleaning.

Later. You need not search far. Just go to the top of this topic.

My problem is outside of the viewfinder and it happens when you clean your viewfinder too often. The glass quality is not like an iPhone or else…

but your answer will perhaps be true also in my case as it is not possible to open the viewfinder and replace the glass
