jaapv Posted August 15, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 15, 2007 Gorges du Verdon! Europe's Grand Canyon Well .maybe a wee bit smaller...
GMB Posted August 15, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 15, 2007 Just came back last weekend after having been there for two weeks and some 1200 shots. The place is indeed big. I would go for the villages, markets, and village feasts. If you are in the Nimes/Arles region, you can also go for the bull races. Problem is, the food and wine are excellent as well, and focussing a 75 lux after a bottle of rose is not allways easy
stunsworth Posted August 15, 2007 Share #5 Posted August 15, 2007 Towns, Arles, Montpellier, Avignon, Nimes are all attractive. I like Arles a lot, the old town is very pretty. The bull running doesn't happen very often, though I did happen to be there one year at the right time - and no I didn't run against the bulls! <grin>. The old Roman arena is used for bullfighting. A pichet of wine in the cafe Van Gogh painted - 'le cafe la nuit' is reasonably priced considering its location in an old square and the connection to Van Gogh. The last time I was there the food was terrible, one of the worst meals I've ever had in France.
rpierce Posted August 15, 2007 Share #6 Posted August 15, 2007 For our trip in May and in a very few days, the plan was to follow and get a glimpse of the area that inspired the French impressionists: Aix, Arles, Avignon, Chateu nuf du Pape, Ilse Su Sorgue, Les Baux, Nice, Pont du Gard, Saint Marie de-la-Mer, San Remy and Tavel...not in that order. The M8 (and the D2x) got a workout. Photos from the M8 with 28mm F2.8 are below: 1. inside the Cafe Van Gogh, 2. the market in old town Nice and 3. the gardens at Van Gogh's asylum at San Remy. Have a great trip! Bob Pierce
johnastovall Posted August 15, 2007 Share #7 Posted August 15, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Try to get by the French Foreign Legion Headquarters and Museum in Aubagne. I would also suggest the retirement home for the Legion at Puyloubier where retired Legionnaires work the vines and and make wine.
Jack_Flesher Posted August 15, 2007 Share #8 Posted August 15, 2007 Another vote for Arles and Avignon. Arles has a wonderful street market on Thursdays(?) Also, spend at least a day or two in the Luberon Valley and surrounds.
stunsworth Posted August 15, 2007 Share #9 Posted August 15, 2007 A few piccies here. The ones from the musicians to the bulls were all taken in Arle - Canon 300D and Leica glass for the musicians. South of the Loire Spetember 2004
sunafan Posted August 15, 2007 Share #10 Posted August 15, 2007 Another vote for the Gorges du Verdon. Not only hiking and shooting is brilliant, but you can also go swimming after a strenuous hike (or climb, if you like) in pools that you will not easily find elsewhere. Very recommended. And Mont St Victoire (in the area of Aix-en-Provence) has a very scenic abbey church. And the market in Aix...
photoarne Posted August 15, 2007 Share #11 Posted August 15, 2007 I didn't realize there were so many experts on Provence on the forum, this is great To add a few more places: If you have the time and/or inclination visit the Valleé des Merveilles near the Italian border. Some small interesting villages in the Nice/Cannes area: St. Paul de Vence, Vence itself, Tourette sur Loup, Valbonne, Gourdon, Peille & Peillon, Gilette, St. Agnes. If you continue inland to visit the Gorges du Verdon, Castellane and Cotignac is worth a stop. Along the coast see the magnificent Calanques west of Cassis (worth a visit in its own right) or those east of Marseille. The island Porquerolles is lovely and has interesting "sentiers" all around the island. Further up in Provence I second the good advice given above, but don't miss Aix, one of the most beautiful cities in France IMO. Les Baux is a must, but try also more off-beat places like Roussillon and Oppède-le-Vieux. Cavaillon might be worth a visit for two reasons; it has few if any monuments that attracts tourists, so its odd facades are relatively virgin territory, and on Monday mornings it has one of the most remarkable markets in all of Provence. Have a nice trip.
