ArtZ Posted August 14, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 14, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) This morning I took my M8 S/N: 3329084 with my SUMMICRON-M 1:2/28 ASPH SN: 4007786, both bought early june 2007. When I tried to infinity focus, I realized that the distance ring blocked at 5/7 meters. The ring was very shift and refused to go further than 5/7 meters. I haven’t kicked the lens (no accidental dammage) and this is the first time that happens. After removing the lens from the body to check if I could see something that could block the lens (maybe some dust), I couldn’t see anything unusual. When I put back the lens in the M8 body and it worked normally. After a few shots, I had the same problem again. I’ve observed when I move the aperture ring, this causes the distance ring to block. I guess something is loose inside the lens. Did someone had this problem before? Any thoughts or suggestions? Do you think I shall send this lens back to Solms or maybe after some use it will become as before? Thanks .
Advertisement Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Hi ArtZ, Take a look here Problem with SUMMICRON-M 1:2/28 ASPH. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shootist Posted August 14, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 14, 2007 I also have a problem with at least one of my lenses, at times, focusing out to infinity. Mainly my 75 Cron. Some times it is very stiff when turning the focusing ring to infinity. Once I move it in and out a few times to clears up or take the lens off and remount it clears up. I do NOT think it is the lens itself. I think it is how the cam on the lens hits the wheel on the RF arm. Take the lens off and look at the wheel and the cam. If there are marks on the top or bottom of the wheel or on the cam I think you need to send both in to have it looked at. I haven't bothered to do that as mine does focus and will move all the way and it only does it some times. If I see/feel it happening I take the lens off and remount it and it clears up. ArtZ Posted August 14, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted August 14, 2007 Thank you Ed. I've followed your instructions to check how the cam on the lens hits the wheel on the RF arm. What I found is rather surprising. When the lens is not attached to the camera, it's even more difficult to move the distance ring. Once the lens is on the camera, it blocks sometimes (since today) but if I move the aperture ring and/or pull the front of the lens (where is the lens cap) a bit, the lens unblocks and moves smoothly. Wierd. I have sent an email to Attila von Gymes. I'll see what he tells me (if he's not on holidays). Cheers. .

If the focusing ring is hard to turn when OFF the camera and by PULLING on the front of the lens stop the hard focusing ring movement that lens need some work
ArtZ Posted August 14, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted August 14, 2007 Yes, I think you're right. That's my opinion too. What's wierd is the fact that two days ago I took some pictures with that lens with no problem (indoors and landscapes). I didn't remove the lens out of the camera and the camera stayed on a table. This morning, I just couldn't set focus to infinity. Thanks for your help. Regards .

Could be someone pumped it hard on the lens or knocked it OFF the table landing on the lens. Just seems really odd that one day it works as expected and the next you have to pull out on the front of the lens to get the focusing ring to work smoothly. I'm just spending a few days days on my own working for an ecological project (warm pumps and solar heating). I cannot put the blame on wife or kids LOL Seriously, nobody has touched the M8 in the meantime. I was using yesterday a 1Ds because it was raining. I hadn't even download to my laptop the pictures I took with the M8 (some indoor pictures for testing the WATE with John Milich's adapter and a beautiful sunset). I've made some more tests today and I have the impression frames doesn't work fine either with this lens. In short distance focus (between 0.7 and 1 metes), I get the focus point in the picture much lower than what it really was. Maybe this was already there but I didn't tested before car I don't really take pictures with this lens to close objects. I'll see what Attila says and I'll wait to be back in Paris to take the lens to my dealer. I think something got loose inside. I don't think it's a big problem though. The lens focus correctly. By the way, I'm very lucky with focusing problems: None of my other 4 lenses (or the body) seems to have problems with back/front focusing. Cheers and thank you again. . ArtZ Posted August 21, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted August 21, 2007 I took the lens to be repaired this morning. Yesterday, the front part of the lens (aperture ring) detached from the rear part (focus ring)!!! I had the lens is two pieces. What happened? No clue! . erl Posted August 23, 2007 Share #9 Posted August 23, 2007 Manuel, you did the right thing to send your lens in for checking and repair. There is very little you can do yourself. Same as with a car. If the gears keep jamming, it needs an experienced mechanic. They are all machines and prone to fail at times. Timely service always minimizes the problem. Console yourself with the fact that had you persisted in trying to use it, the damage could only get worse.
ArtZ Posted August 23, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted August 23, 2007 Erl, Thank you. I tried to use the lens because it's my favorite lens. I like the colors, the contrast and the sharpness. 28mm is a great focal lenght on a M8 for street photography. Attila assured me that I will get the lens in two weeks. Well, I think I will hold the lens like this when it will be back from Solms Welcome, dear visitor!
