To me fast lenses (on the Monochrom) are needed only when you want to play with shallow DOF, so mostly longer lenses or the Noctilux come in to play. With the M10 Monochrom high iso capability’s you do not need a fast lens for low light situations anymore and that opens up a whole new world for older (or cheaper) not so fast lenses. To me this is what makes the latest Monochrom so different from other digital Leica M’s.

john1970 Posted June 18, 2020 Share #22 Posted June 18, 2020 Interesting question and I went with the following combination: M10M and SL2 + L-to-M adapter. I strongly considered a M10-P + EVF, but given the cost difference between that combination and SL2 + L-M adapter made the SL2 the more appropriate choice for me. I do like the ergonomics and IBIS on the SL2 and focusing the M lens on the camera is very easy. IMO the EVF on the SL2 is world-class. B&W photography is more of a passion for me so I do shoot the M10M more often, but in cases when I want color the SL2 was an obvious choice for me. Herr Barnack Posted June 19, 2020 Share #23 Posted June 19, 2020 I see no problem with owning and using both an M10M and an M10-P if doing so is not cost prohibitive. If you create specific bodies of work in B&W and other specific bodies of work in color, it would make sense to own and use both cameras.
zone5 Posted June 25, 2020 Share #24 Posted June 25, 2020 Hello I really understand OP's thought about this matter since I have been through same. I had M10 and SL2 combination and I ended up selling M10 to buy M10M and using M10M and Sl2 combination. I bought SL24-90 at beginning but sold it., It is indeed excellent lens but for me, it is too heavy and too big. I am carrying M10M and SL2 with only 2 or 3 M lens. For me whole idea about Leica M system was simpler and smaller yet excellent lens and camera with precious user experience. SL lens system is excellent without doubt but they are too bulky and heavy. I am quite happy with current set up. M10M is far better camera for black and white than any camera that has to convert color to BW. It really has amazing smooth silky tonality fro BW photo and it has so much detail and is really sharp. I thought main reason for M10M is high iso performance but now I think main reason for this camera is killer BW tonality with so much detail even low iso setting that is far better than any camera I have tried. So I think having M10M and X1D II will be nice combination. I use 35mm asph fle lux, 50mm asph lux and 28mm summicron v2. I was considering 28mm lux vs this and decided to have cron . I love this lens a lot. it is very small and it works really well with SL2 and M10M.

With a 35 v4 Cron, 50 v3 Summi, 75 Cron ASP, 24 Elmerit ASP & a handful of CV primes (15-40mm)... there's a host/glut of "slower"/older lenses which work _very_ well with M10M (IMHO), BUT, the M10M is only special IF you're after B&W tonality, as different from color vibrancy/rendition. With the M10D, colors; M10M tonality... both excel, for different outcomes (sure, M10D files post process to B&W with ICC files, Okay, apples & pomegranates ;) ). Agreed that the M10M will render more from _all_ lenses, appropriately used. YMWV, as applied... with all things: it's then, & after, non? in keeping the best, & saving the rest (potential best) pix, Dave
LeicaR10 Posted July 9, 2020 Share #26 Posted July 9, 2020 (edited) Dancook, I was in the same place with the two M10 cameras and S system. (I also tried the excellent SL system but my clients didn't like the way the photographs rendered in a too perfect way as I was often told) But after reviewing my many photographs taken with the three cameras, I came to the conclusion each has its niche and usefulness in photography. My clients who purchase my photographs agree depending on their need and requirements. I found the M10-M renders a incredibly smooth tonal range that I do not have the time nor interest to achieve with the M10-P via conversions. The S3 and system are in a league unto its own. It renders in a cinematic way, smooth color hues and in detail that my clients require. I have on order the M10-R that will arrive shortly and that will replace the M10-P. In my business and genre of landscape photography I came to the conclusion that I need M cameras for times when I must hike to very remote, hazardous locations and need to limit weight. The M cameras fill this requirement. The S3 and system is superb and my clients vote with their wallets. Depending on your genre of photography and requirements for camera gear, you might well find you don't need the Hasselblad if the results prove outstanding with the M10-M and say a M10-P or R. Last, I believe there is no cure for GAS...I have been to GAS rehab many times only to relapse like so many...so I just enjoy creating photographs with excellent Leica gear. Hope this helps. r/ Mark Edited July 9, 2020 by LeicaR10 Edit 1
