I have a basic question about the swing out polariser. How mamy f stops does it 'swallow' and is this always the same no matter how you turn/adjust it? So, basically, if i put it on the lens and always leave it there is it equivalent to a x stop nd filter?

Thanks

Not really true for every situation.

I use POL filters for long and trying to understand their behaviors on M takes some time.

Let's say depending on the direction of lighting/percent of reflection/rotation, -1EV to - 2.5EV can be good starting point to experiment.

have a look in this thread, post #10

This can vary a bit depending upon orientation, so you can't definitively specify a number for all occasions.  I've never tried one of the new models, but the two older models I've owned were in the general neighborhood of 1 - 2 stops depending on orientation.  If you watch the meter as you rotate the filter it will help you get a general idea.

No.  ND filters are not subject to change depending on orientation.

Thanks for the replies....I'm using the filter on a M3 with the external meter which makes it a bit difficult to meter through the filter....I'll just give it a try to meter without the filter, adjust the filter and then just open one more f stop.
