Imaging opening up a raw image in your favorite image processing software.   You click on the B&W button and tweak the sliders to get the image looking OK with even tones.  That's "B&W Nat".   Now you take the contrast slider and add in some extra contrast or you do the same with a slightly exaggerated S-curve in the curves panel.  That is "B&W HC".
