erniethemilk Posted April 21, 2020 Share #1 Posted April 21, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just picked up a type V Summicron for my M10-P but focussing seems to be off, I think it's back focussing at infinity. Wondering if anyone in the UK knows if Leica UK do their own camera and lens calibration or if it has to go back to Germany for this service. Of course, I understand it's not going to happen anytime soon, but worth knowing for when we're back to some sort of normality!
Advertisement Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 Hi erniethemilk, Take a look here Camera & Lens Calibration in the UK. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Richardgb Posted April 21, 2020 Share #2 Posted April 21, 2020 Although not exactly the same problem, a couple of years ago I wanted my M 240's rangefinder checked. No repairer in the UK would touch a digital Leica, although one did eventually offer to look at the rangefinder as the principle (if not the the exact mechanism) is similar to older Leicas. On a brighter note, courier services are (mostly) still operating, and Germany seems to be cautiously opening up, so perhaps an e-mail to customer service in Wetzlar might get a (relatively) timely reply.
erniethemilk Posted April 21, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted April 21, 2020 Thanks. Leica UK confirmed time me today that calibration means going back to the factory which, albeit irrelevant at present presents a major PITA at some point in the future as I’m guessing anything going back to the factory over the next couple of months will take an age to come back. 🙄
Peter Kilmister Posted April 21, 2020 Share #4 Posted April 21, 2020 @erniethemilk If Leica Mayfair can't help you then send it to Wetzlar. Several years ago I had a problem with an old Leica digital camera. It was shipped to (in those days) Solms and returned within a week. I really don't understand why they would be busy right now. In the meantime use a smartphone.
erniethemilk Posted April 22, 2020 Author Share #5 Posted April 22, 2020 From what I understand from Leica UK, Germany are accepting no repairs, service work at present. Imagine the backlog when they do finally re-open!

I cannot be sure, but I would be surprised if he and Cathy were not working. He is reliable, fast and affordable.

I’ve found someone who can offer the service in the U.K., so I may look at that option.
jaapv Posted April 23, 2020 Share #8 Posted April 23, 2020 https://www.kamera-service.info/index.php/en/ Very well reputed. You're still in the EU so there is no difference where you send it to.

I wasn’t sure if he looked at digital or simply film, but he did come back and advise he’d take a good look at it if needs be. https://www.cameraworks-uk.com

Mikep996 Posted June 4, 2020 Share #12 Posted June 4, 2020 (edited) FWIW - I don't mean to sound knowledgeable about the subject since, until a few weeks ago I didn't know ANYTHING about it... BUT...adjusting the rangefinder on the M10 is, frankly, quite easy as I discovered on this site. OTOH, from what I've read, adjusting lenses is much more complex and I would not attempt to do that myself. I had film Leicas (M2, M6, M7) which I shot with for many years and never thought - or even knew - anything about rangefinder calibration. Heck, maybe they needed calibration but I never noticed anything in the photos that indicated they did. But my (Ebay) M10 rangefinder was definitely in need of calibration since any photo shot with the rangefinder, regardless of lens, was soft at the focus point. Shot with live view/focus peaking, they were very sharp. Instructions here on the site allowed me to correct the problem in 10 minutes and now there is no difference in sharpness between the rangefinder and the live view w/focus peaking. The vertical adjustment is a bit more involved because the Leica emblem, present on the standard M10, has to be removed but there are instructions on this site about that as well. Of course, if the lack of sharpness is only with one lens, the lens is the problem. But in my case 4 different Leica lenses acted the same way on the camera.
