helged Posted April 10, 2020 Share #1 Posted April 10, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello folks! Anyone out there with experience with wide angle MF lenses (say less than 35mm FF-equivalent, irrespective of mount) with low coma/astigmatism? The Leica S24mm is quite good, although some aberrations are seen; the upper right 1/3 of an image is shown below (f3.5, 16 sec exposure, so some trailing is present). Welcome, dear visitor! Stuart Richardson Posted April 10, 2020 Share #2 Posted April 10, 2020 I think it is hard to imagine that many that you could fit on an S would be better than the S lenses...the Mamiya 7 lenses are superb, but they are only usable on the Mamiya. The FE 50mm for the Hasselblad has coma. Perhaps some of the H series lenses?
Photon42 Posted April 22, 2020 Share #3 Posted April 22, 2020 Did you research the Contax 645 35 f3.5? Mind you it would only autofocus with the optical finder using phase detection AF. You would need to manually focus it in live view.

Thanks for the tip - I am not familiar with the Contax 645 35 f3.5 - but I will check...

Take a shot of the night sky, no clouds, no moon, away from urban light pollution. Shoot wide open, at ISO1600, with 16 sec exposure time. Try to get the stars in focus. Examine the edges/corners in Lightroom (or whatever); are the stars like points or are they deformed? Ideally you should see pinpoint stars, also in the outer 20 percent of the image. davidmknoble Posted April 22, 2020 Share #8 Posted April 22, 2020 I will go back and look at my northern lights shots with the S-24mm. I do not remember having issues with abberrations on the light points of the stars. If I find they were good, I will post an enlargement of an upper corner...
helged Posted April 22, 2020 Author Share #9 Posted April 22, 2020 I plan to shoot night sky with the S24 and a star tracker on the other side of the (northern) summer; the night are about to fade away now at 69 deg N... And I have settled on that S24 is fine for this type of photography. (On the SL I use the Sigma Art 14mm f1.8. I tried 3 version of this lens before I found one almost free of abberations into the corners (of the remaining two, one was hardly usable, the other ok'ish). And to my surprise, the SL24-90 @24mm and f2.8 is the lens with least abberations I have tested. Fantastic for a zoom, irrespective on software corrections!)

ip's Posted April 23, 2020 Share #11 Posted April 23, 2020 hi helged, Did you research the SMC Pentax-A 645 35mm f3.5 Medium Format Manual Fo cus Lens? Or consider Leica PC-Super-Angulon-R 28mm / 1:2.8 changing the flange distance.

Altering the flange distance seem a little complicated (and I dont have this lens). But the Pentax lens will be tested!
