Well there is another reason for it that maybe nobody touched on it. It's one thing to talk about a lens and completely another to own it than talk about what it can do, not so much on this forum but from other forums this is a big issue with people shooting off and never owning something and giving completely bad info. I hate bad info , so in this case it does not bother me. But each his own

That's a good point Guy.

My post wasn't intended to criticise, I am genuinely perplexed as to why posters should do it. Some forums are a lot worse than this one. Indeed on one I was reading some even listed camera bags and filters.

I do think it's a reasonable question. As I said previously the only thing I can put it down to is a ' bicycle shed thing' or pride of ownership......I am not condemning either, I understand that to some that has importance, in this ever changing world such things might not matter, conversely I I was brought up in a world where such things were eschewed.

Interesting to note the lack of photographic appendages to signatures in this thread.:)

Maybe some of us clowns "must do it" because we childishly believe that this forum is not exclusively but also about technical issues. Even more foolishly I, for one, am deluded to think that it might be helpful to know who else uses the same equipment that I use (in case someone has a problem they might be able to direct their enquiries to appropriate fellow users). Obviously this view is not shared by many others. So there - live with it.

While I'm at it: I feel irritated by wannabe witty or philosophical signatures that repeat the same quote ad nauseam. Most of these quotes are nicked from other forums anyway.

My last statement has about as much substance to it as the allegations (boys toys, clowns, mine is bigger than yours) laid out in this thread so far ;)

It's no big thing.

I don't bother to do it here, but I do on RFF which seems more gear-orientated. I kept getting PMs asking me what lens I used for what, so I put it up,

It doesn't define me any more than my choice of font, or pen or watch or anything else. It is generally harmless, although I agree some people seem to delight in having longer signatures than their average posts. :D

As to the quotes, it doesn't bother me. Some make me smile, but more for their inappropriateness than their innate humour.

Live and let live, eh?

Regards,

Bill

It's harmless and I'm sure there are as many reasons as there are people listing. I like seeing what other people are using, but it doesn't make me want to own it It's like window shopping seeing the combinations I don't read anything into it..

I don't think it's a problem unless your spouses have major issues with you spending habits. :D But again, I've read so many moving stories on this very forum about spouses buying their other halves M8s as gifts. :p

Because the message is the important thing, not the Proustian signature?

Have You read À la recherche du temps perdu? It's a great book and I'm more than happy to find a Coinnaisseur on this otherwise more camera/watch/car- orientated forum!

Well - he might have read it but I own it in 12 hard backed volumes published by Chatto & Windus in 1943. The binding is blue and the spine is lettered in gold in a red cartouche with gold hatching. I'm thinking of sending them to Solms however as the black print seems to have a funny purple cast.:D:D:D
