meatboy Posted August 13, 2007 Share #21 Posted August 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't really mind seeing what others use, and I don't care if they don't list it either. Seeing it in someones signature does not make me want to rush out and buy the same gear. Its harmless.
Advertisement Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Hi meatboy, Take a look here Why must they do it. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest guy_mancuso Posted August 13, 2007 Share #22 Posted August 13, 2007 Well there is another reason for it that maybe nobody touched on it. It's one thing to talk about a lens and completely another to own it than talk about what it can do, not so much on this forum but from other forums this is a big issue with people shooting off and never owning something and giving completely bad info. I hate bad info , so in this case it does not bother me. But each his own
Annie135 Posted August 13, 2007 Author Share #23 Posted August 13, 2007 That's a good point Guy. My post wasn't intended to criticise, I am genuinely perplexed as to why posters should do it. Some forums are a lot worse than this one. Indeed on one I was reading some even listed camera bags and filters. I do think it's a reasonable question. As I said previously the only thing I can put it down to is a ' bicycle shed thing' or pride of ownership......I am not condemning either, I understand that to some that has importance, in this ever changing world such things might not matter, conversely I I was brought up in a world where such things were eschewed. Interesting to note the lack of photographic appendages to signatures in this thread. Brian Brittany Spaniel called Wesson, Smith died three years ao :(
dhsimmonds Posted August 13, 2007 Share #24 Posted August 13, 2007 Annie I am much more interested in what you got up to in the bicycle shed!? Come on now tell us all about it.
Annie135 Posted August 13, 2007 Author Share #25 Posted August 13, 2007 Well Dave it was a VERY MINOR public school. And it was 'behind' not in ( what the hell is " Blizeln")
dist Posted August 13, 2007 Share #26 Posted August 13, 2007 Maybe some of us clowns "must do it" because we childishly believe that this forum is not exclusively but also about technical issues. Even more foolishly I, for one, am deluded to think that it might be helpful to know who else uses the same equipment that I use (in case someone has a problem they might be able to direct their enquiries to appropriate fellow users). Obviously this view is not shared by many others. So there - live with it. While I'm at it: I feel irritated by wannabe witty or philosophical signatures that repeat the same quote ad nauseam. Most of these quotes are nicked from other forums anyway. My last statement has about as much substance to it as the allegations (boys toys, clowns, mine is bigger than yours) laid out in this thread so far
hamey Posted August 13, 2007 Share #27 Posted August 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Doesn't bother me. If they want to list their Leica equipment, it's their business. I sometimes envy them for having all that gear. Cheers.
bill Posted August 13, 2007 Share #28 Posted August 13, 2007 It's no big thing. I don't bother to do it here, but I do on RFF which seems more gear-orientated. I kept getting PMs asking me what lens I used for what, so I put it up, It doesn't define me any more than my choice of font, or pen or watch or anything else. It is generally harmless, although I agree some people seem to delight in having longer signatures than their average posts. As to the quotes, it doesn't bother me. Some make me smile, but more for their inappropriateness than their innate humour. Live and let live, eh? Regards, Bill
Craftsman Posted August 13, 2007 Share #29 Posted August 13, 2007 It's harmless and I'm sure there are as many reasons as there are people listing. I like seeing what other people are using, but it doesn't make me want to own it It's like window shopping seeing the combinations I don't read anything into it.. Iron Flatline Posted August 13, 2007 Share #30 Posted August 13, 2007 Actually, I like forums where there is a specific section in the User Profile where they can list it, specifically so they DON'T have to put it in their sig. I think LUF has it, too.
andybarton Posted August 13, 2007 Share #31 Posted August 13, 2007 This forum allows you to put your kit in a list there, should you so wish.
Kasimir Posted August 13, 2007 Share #32 Posted August 13, 2007 Glad to hear that. But why is it restricted to 300 characters?
sdai Posted August 13, 2007 Share #33 Posted August 13, 2007 I don't think it's a problem unless your spouses have major issues with you spending habits. But again, I've read so many moving stories on this very forum about spouses buying their other halves M8s as gifts.
stunsworth Posted August 13, 2007 Share #34 Posted August 13, 2007 Glad to hear that. But why is it restricted to 300 characters? Because the message is the important thing, not the Proustian signature?
FinnPirat Posted August 13, 2007 Share #35 Posted August 13, 2007 ...As someone with rather more cameras than the average camera shop ... hej, youre so cool man! with an indication like that, you're not even forced to list all your equipment.... Kasimir Posted August 13, 2007 Share #36 Posted August 13, 2007 Because the message is the important thing, not the Proustian signature? Have You read À la recherche du temps perdu? It's a great book and I'm more than happy to find a Coinnaisseur on this otherwise more camera/watch/car- orientated forum!

stunsworth Posted August 13, 2007 Share #38 Posted August 13, 2007 Ewald, no I've not read it. It's one of those books I've promised I'll read before I die, and I mean to do that. The sheer length is a bit daunting though.
cocker Posted August 13, 2007 Share #39 Posted August 13, 2007 Have You read À la recherche du temps perdu? It's a great book and I'm more than happy to find a Coinnaisseur on this otherwise more camera/watch/car- orientated forum! Well - he might have read it but I own it in 12 hard backed volumes published by Chatto & Windus in 1943. The binding is blue and the spine is lettered in gold in a red cartouche with gold hatching. I'm thinking of sending them to Solms however as the black print seems to have a funny purple cast.:D:D
