Two Screens

As some of you know, I recently purchased an IMAC which is both a computer and a screen. I connected my DELL Ultra-sharp screen to it (this is the screen I was using with my PC) so I could work with two screens at one time, but I've noticed that the resolution on the second screen (the DELL) is just not there as it should be. Is there a solution for this problem?

Suggestion - go to System Preferences select Display. With a second monitor connected you should be able to select each monitor to set the respective display settings. (If not click "Detect Displays" that should result in both being recognised.

 

After that it should be a matter of trial and error, selecting the highest display setting that you can get away with, for each monitor. Trial and error sounds a bit unscientific but it should work, at least it did for me on an old iMac. How much resolution I can get on the second monitor is really down to how much the video card will support.

I tried it, and I put it at the highest resolution. It looks sharper now but I think the IMAC screen is actually sharper, a better performer. I wonder if others agree with this?

Mmm......, not sure what to suggest, other than to try different combinations of Hz and resolution settings, until you hit on the combination that gets the best possible result on your preferred monitor (the Dell?).

 

Don't know which iMac you have, but you''ll be aware that you'll be limited by how much the graphics card will output. One of the limitations of an iMac system - at least with a PowerMac you could upgrade the graphics card as required. Being an iMac owner myself, I'm familiar with the issue.

Sometimes on displays like the Dell there are buttons around the edge that you can press that will bring up a menu on screen. In this menu you may be able to change things like screen temperature and even sharpness or focus. The manual that came with the Dell may have more information.

 

Another thing you can do is calibrate both of your screens. You may already be doing this, I don't know. If not you can pick up a huey Pro that will do the job on both screens. Until then Apple makes it possible to calibrate, although not real well, in System Preferences: Displays: Color tab: Calibrate button. Definitely click on Expert Mode once you click the Calibrate button.
